🎬 Kinds of Kindness

Movie poster for “Kinds of Kindness”.

I enjoyed this. It had me constantly wondering and wanting to know what happens next. I really liked the quirkiness of it all. But then in the end it left me kind of empty and wondering “why all this?” and “what for?”. All the stories had the same subjects it dealt with, but I couldn’t find any purpose (if there is any), and why it had to be three episodes. So I had the suspicion the movie is just weird for weirdness sake. But maybe that’s just Lanthimos’s thing and I shouldn’t complain. What never seems to disappoint, though, is how he films everything. It’s just fun to watch. Emma Stone was superb once again, but so were all the other actors.

🎬 Mac and Me

Movie poster for “Mac and Me”.

Another Mondo Bizarr flick. Reading the summary, I was actually expecting something way worse than this. This was actually high quality and looked a lot like more famous American movies from that time. But rightly so, it's not as highly regarded: it's just all a bit off and wacky at times. But that doesn't mean it's less entertaining! Just more bizarre. The chase scene is fantastic, the musical part at McD is just great and the ending is just the whimsical cherry on top.

🎬 Xaver und sein außerirdischer Freund

Uff.

Tja, was soll ich sagen. Prost!

🎬 Christine

Movie poster for “Christine”.

Another classic where I don't know whether I had seen this as a teenager. But I really couldn't remember any scenes. This was fantastic, though. Apart from obvious technological or cultural clues, you wouldn't think this is such an old movie. It really holds up.

Now, the film actually manages to portrait Christine as and actually evil car. The stunts are top-notch - oh my, the whole scene at the gas station! - and the special effects when Christine repairs herself are an absolute sensation. Great characters, too - it's been quite clever how the evilness progressively affects Arnie's own mood.

Bonus was seeing this on the big screen, getting to fully experience the film's awesome sound and music.

🎬 Longlegs

Movie poster for “Longlegs”.

Has tons of atmosphere and Nicolas Cage as Longlegs is actually really creepy. Lovingly filmed. And great acting. I thought the plot pace was a little odd (it's high-paced in the beginning and the end, and in the middle quite slow), and the resolution was not all that satisfying. Overall, though, I was really into it, and didn't notice how time flew by at the cinema.

🎬 Possessor

Uff! Brutal! And really menacing and suspenseful. Liked this a lot! The gore effects, that sequence when she enters the other body, and how this looked, sounded and felt in general. A few minus points for missing explanations and the what I felt not-so-logical ending. I'd watch this again!

🎬 Challengers

Movie poster for “Challengers”.
This review may contain spoilers. Tap or click to view.

I wasn't planning on joining Nicole when she put on this movie. But then the characters and plot drew me in. I wanted to know how and why the three ended up where they ended up (the film is very non-linear, which I liked for the most part). The acting was great, too.

But unfortunately, it's downhill from there. It's increasingly less about Art - the only really likeable person - and only very slowly unveils more and more about the relationship between the other two. The soundtrack was irritating. And the ending is not very plausible and it's a collage of infuriatingly endless slow-motion shots.

📖 Tiere essen – Jonathan Safran Foer

Book cover of “Tiere essen” by Jonathan Safran Foer.

Book cover of “Die Verwandlung” by Franz Kafka.

🎬 MaXXXine

Movie poster for “MaXXXine”.

Another very entertaining part of the trilogy. The story – especially at the end – has its weaknesses IMHO (and I couldn't help but be reminded of Once upon a Time in Hollywood). But this just looks fantastic once again, has great acting, and a lot of excellent scenes.

🎬 The Royal Hotel

Movie poster for “The Royal Hotel”.

This really drew me in. It gets increasingly menacing and suspenseful. I think this movie really succeeds in showing how frightening (dangerous even) and really uncomfortable it can be as a young woman (waitress) amongst a horde of men.

Acting was 👌. Hearing some Aussie accent was, too.

Anyhow, I'll now have a Dickin's Cider (sorry! 🫣).

🎬 Pearl

Movie poster for “Pearl”.

Liked how this looked. Loved Mia Goth's acting, in particular her long monologue and that end scene where she makes faces for a minute or two. The plot could have been a little more focused, but overall a well-rounded, well-entertaining film.

🎬 Split

Movie poster for “Split”.

I liked Anya Taylor-Joy's performance. And James McAvoy is good, too. But the movie as a whole did not grip me. I just didn't find it suspenseful. The main character is not menacing enough. And there's way too much going on, and as a result the plot suffers. A bit of an eye-roller.

🎬 Late Night with the Devil

Movie poster for “Late Night with the Devil”.

Such a great plot and so well executed. I assume this is a pretty low budget film, and all the more respect to make it so entertaining. Spooky, suspenseful, with great acting and some nice gory special effects.

🎬 Peeping Tom

Movie poster for “Peeping Tom”.

It was late when we started this, and I didn't pay full attention the whole time. But this was still a fantastic surprise. A great story with a really creepy dude and a lot of suspense. Never seen it in a movie old movie like this. But it did remind me of Psycho. Generally this was pretty Hitchcock-like. And Hitchcock I like. And so do I like this one. Recommended!

🎬 Four Flies on Grey Velvet

*sigh* Argento! He has really good ideas and can certainly film those, too. But the crazy outrageous story and unbelievable dialogue still annoys me.

🎬 Maybe... Maybe Not

Movie poster for “Maybe... Maybe Not”.

Haha. ;-)

🎬 Caché

Movie poster for “Caché”.

Been putting off writing about this one. I guess this could be somewhat watched as a straight crime/voyeur story. But it’s much more subtle than this. It’s also a lot about the relationships and reactions of its characters. And it certainly has its surprising twists – I totally overlooked the detail in the final scene, even though I was looking for something like this. Anyhow, it‘s a good movie and probably better on a second watch. But I‘m not sure if I will.

🎬 Alien

Movie poster for “Alien”.

It‘s been a while; and I mostly seem to remember scenes from Aliens (Part 2 of the frnachise). But this was a great rewatch. I thought this aged extremely well. The menacing atmosphere, the sets, the sounds, the story. A classic for a reason!

🎥 Forkalyst - Gemstone (live)

Forkalyst - Gemstone (live)

On saturday, our band Forkalyst played its first live gig. It was a sold out show at a popular brewery pub here in Düsseldorf. Lots of our friends came around. It was great fun. And I placed my GoPro on the stage railing next to me to record some of it.

🎬 Anatomy of a Fall

Movie poster for “Anatomy of a Fall”.

This movie is 2.5 hours long, but it easily managed to keep me engaged. I found this to be brilliantly told. You're constantly wondering what might have happened. And whether you can trust the suspect and her view of the story. The dialogues felt very authentic and all was brilliantly played by everyone involved, but I found especially Sandra Hüller's and Milo Machado-Graner's (who plays her son) performances remarkable. Extra points for authentic piano playing.

🎬 The Terminator

Movie poster for “The Terminator”.

Woah, haven't watched this in a looong time. But this rewatch was totally worth it. Not much too complain about when it comes to action movies. The atmosphere, the action, that relentlessness, the music, the special effects (which hold up really well, I must say). I'll be back!
