New Bot Day! Johnny 5 hails from Short Circuit (1986). In the 80s we had high hopes for sentient A.I. and movie producers were unaware of the damage of whitewashing in casting, but we knew putting A.I in weapons were a bad idea. Many folks remember the film and its Syd Mead-designed robot fondly. This LEGO edition was a gift from @hellokellykuhl. Welcome to the collection Johnny 5! Also VOTE YES ON 40, NO ON 41 & 42.

2027 Web Platform Feature Ranking

When I was first creating for the web, “The Web Platform” was made up of “whatever Microsoft and Netscape thought would help them obliterate the other.” A lot of what that meant? Write two sets of code to do the same thing. I can probably still write the Flash <embed> and <object> off the top...

Walking

I stopped in awe. Looking up, I saw a tall tree whose base was yellow and top was red, with all of its leaves glistening in the golden sun that made its way through the clouds we have seen in recent days. An adjacent tree had a combination of green leaves and barren branche...

Brainstorming multi-lingual use of Artemis

I now follow three websites or feeds whose authors write in French; in at least two cases, the authors write in both French and English. When I see posts in different languages, I use Firefox’s Translate feature to read them. Firefox Translate is not perfect, but as long as ...

Wonders of Web Weaving, Episode 24

The twenty-fourth episode of Wonders of Web Weaving is out:

In Episode 24, I chat with Alex, the author of alexsirac.com about, among other things, collective intelligence in public commons, what the IndieWeb can learn from Wikipedia, community in comments, and more.

I hope you enjoy the episode!

Wonders of Web Weaving also has an RSS feed you can use to follow along from wherever you get your podcasts.

BE INDIEWEB ENOUGH

I probably will revise this post in the next 24-36 hours. But hopefully not too much. After a good sleep I suspect I’ll have some edits. Ten years ago I articulated my understanding of “indie web.” I’m cutting and pasting those 2016 words verbatim because they are still what I believe. And it’s still why...

flow (or, thinking through) (zine)

After writing autumn (essence, of) today, I worked on another zine: flow (or, thinking through).

When writing flow (or, thinking through) I started with no particular topic in mind other than a vague interest in exploring the concept of flow. To get started, I consulted my notes, bringing in and expanding upon ideas I have written about, and then I let myself explore whatever flowed in the moment.

You can download the zine as a PDF, and follow these instructions to fold the zine. Please enjoy!

autumn (essence, of) (zine)

Today I made a new zine: autumn (essence, of).

This is my first time including imagery in a zine. The front and back covers feature two photos I have taken outdoors recently: a frosty flower and frosty leaves on a bed of grass.

You can download the zine as a PDF, and follow these instructions to fold the zine. Please enjoy!
