Occam's News reports that Trump et al are selling out the US. Putin can get the US to do what he wants by giving Trump money. Total win-win. And the US is flushed down the toilet. That's all that's going on there. All of the journalistic feigned bafflement is make-believe. It's totally obvious what's going on. And don't forget Musk has the world encircled with satellites. If he doesn't want you communicating, you don't communicate. In other words the selling-out has been going on for some time.

Someday all the pieces will be interchangeable. Then there won't be different brands of social networks, just different brands of the software. All parts replaceable. It won't have all the chaos of the web. And that will be a good thing.

Proposed Events for Meetable

Meetable can now replace your Doodle polls! Meetable, my open source event listing website, now lets you propose an event with several possible dates/times. People vote on which one works for them, and the organizer can choose the best date from the votes later.

Ground

Rain may exist, but so too do clear skies, and the possibility for something to start serendipitously, like a raindrop falling from a sky once dry or a wave from a friend you never expected to see. (In Romantics, VI) I wave with words. I weave and paint with words -- with p...

Meaning

What does the concrete path mean to me? In the mirrored ground I see many meanings. Here is a place I have stopped to think. Here is a place over which I have idly walked on my way to somewhere familiar or somewhere new. Here is a vein of the city, made by all those who wal...

RIP Eric Binnion

For the next 30 days, a few billion of you will get an extra header in honor of Eric Binnion. The code in Nginx to do this is poetic: add_header X-Remembering "Eric Binnion <https://friendsofericbinnion.wordpress.com/>" always; Our design team will make that less AI and more humane in the coming days. Automattic.com will have a mourning … Continue reading RIP Eric Binnion →

Do you have Brushes app files? Read this.

This morning I got a GitHub notification. It was on an issue about Brushes app drawing files. It’s this comment: I realise this is a very old thread, but thought this might be of interest to some of you. Someone asked us recently about recovering paintings from the original Brushes app. We’d worked with Brushes...

Installing Websites Must Be Easy

w3ctag.github.io/install-finding/

A message to Apple from the W3C Technical Architecture Group:

We expect user agents to make installation an obvious affordance to users. Specifically, we expect the install option to clearly name the action, and to be easily reachable from the browser’s UI. An entry inside a menu with an unrelated label (such as Share), or several menu layers deep, does not meet this expectation.

Not that William Gibson

I sometimes find myself amused at the errors of recommendation systems. I worked for a streaming music company for several years, and music services are NOTHING but recommendation systems. Heck, walk into a record store or turn on an FM radio and those entities are recommending you listen to music or pick up music. And...

Zero

The term “no-brainer” refers to a suggestion that is so compelling that it would be foolish to even consider not doing it.

I came across a no-brainer recently, thanks to Matt Hobbs:

Make all UK Government websites free to access without mobile data charges.

When I was done slapping my forehead at how obvious this proposal is, I signed the petition. If you’re a UK resident, you should do the same. And then spread the word.

This is the kind of proposal that I imagine any politician would be happy to support, regardless of party affiliation, so don’t be shy about contacting your local MP.

I guess in theory this could be opposed on the grounds that it technically violates net neutrality, but I would hope that the obvious societal benefits would outweigh that objection.

Like I said, a no-brainer.

Jason Snell blogs about Siri AI from the HomeView, which is better than what I assumed earlier. Is this going to be fast enough, though?

Apple does say that if you make a Siri AI query for your personal content, it will search everything on your iPhone or iPad—and that includes apps that aren’t the HomeView. So you should be able to query your iPhone apps, but not actually run them.

firstSentence, a JavaScript function that returns the first sentence in a string. Useful in coming up with something to display for an untitled post. It's always been a klooge, but this time with Claude's help we're using a new API in JavaScript, and supposedly it really works. I'm using it in one of my apps, and you might find it useful too, and let me know if it works for you.
