Food Questions Challenge

There is maybe a fun blogging challenge in writing about our favourite snacks from where we live... After a discussion with Joel and Zachary, I started writing a few questions about food to which I’d love to hear others’ answers. This is in the same vein as the “Bear Blog Q...

Pushing Standards

We get a lot of flak at WordPress.org for supporting older PHP versions, but an area we’ve always pushed the frontier is in Web Standards, getting websites and browsers evolving together to make the web richer. Ever since I caught the religion from Zeldman, promoting more functionality in the browser has been a life mission. … Continue reading Pushing Standards →

Interesting to see Meta working directly with Apple to run Muse Spark Open on Macs efficiently. John Voorhees has a good summary at MacStories. But the cost is still pretty insane… Spending well over $10k to get “only” an 800-billion parameter model when the frontier is still a ways ahead of that.

The Mountain In The Sea by Ray Nayler

Back in 2019, I read the book Other Minds: The Octopus, the Sea, and the Deep Origins of Consciousness by Peter Godfrey-Smith and said: I really enjoyed this evolutionary tale. It’s equal parts biology and philosophy. I will never look at cephalopods quite the same way a...

Current Affairs has enshrined tough restrictions on publishing using generative AI into its union contract. It's bet is that it will publish better journalism that way.

Treat your 1:1 relationships with intention

Too often, 1:1s can be reactive, unstructured spaces - or simple status reports that don't give the relationship time to breathe. This advice changes that dynamic.

Catch a Bird (or, Happiness)

What made you happy today? asks Catch a Bird. I love this question, and the website. For the last five minutes or so, I have been both answering the aforementioned question, and trying my best to make some people smile. Here are a selection of my answers to the question:
Trying 100% dark chocolate for the first time. Playing the guitar. Singing my heart out. The joy of autumn. Have a wonderful day :) Taylor Swift! Seeing two cats while wandering the neighbourhood. You’re an amazing human :)
I love technology that can highlight the best of us; technology that brings us together.

To you, dear reader, I hope you have a wonderful day.

Reminder, Atlantis is the codename for the new Frontier that runs in Electron. As I work on other projects now, it's not on my front burner, but in a way it is, because I'm using it constantly as I work on FeedLand and the other project. We just released a new set of parts t...

I am afraid my stuffed dinosaur will eat us all. He must be stopped

buttondown.com/practicaltips/archive/i-am-afraid-my-stuffed-dinosaur-will-eat-us-all/

My computed probability of the risk that Chomp will eat me, or in statistical terms, P(CHOMP), is approximately 95%. This has been a tough realization for me, because I consider Chomp a close friend, and I insist that no harm or regulation should come to him. However, if ...

Reading more details in the story of an OpenAI engineer getting arrested after bugging a conference room:

Abdulrahman Alfozan, 35, a Saudi national, was arrested Friday and charged with using or attempting to use a device to intercept oral communications. He made his initial appearance in federal court Tuesday and remains in custody.

He seems to have had a fairly normal career, so what caused this flip to espionage? Strange. Not the obvious “he was a Chinese spy” that people might guess.
