Saturday

Panorama from today. I enjoy riding waves quite a lot. I went to Ocean Beach. Kelly went to San Diego Design Week. I updated my avatar on lots of services. It was a bit easier to do on my Elsewhere page. I also added it (still out of order and with duplicates) to my “PFP”...

Went to see Come From Away tonight at Zach. I love musicals but had been avoiding it over the years, felt too close to 9/11. Glad to finally see it. It’s good. 🎭

A long, well-researched blog post from Andrew Sharp that attempts to pour some cold water on the accelerating “AI is going to kill us all” narrative:

The vague and unfalsifiable fears expressed by AI leaders are predicated on leaps in the technology that may well be foreseeable, but also on the assumption that humans will be completely powerless to intervene and mitigate harms, or perhaps use technology themselves to innovate solutions.

Well I got a lot done today. We had a bit of a meltdown due to a Atlantis bug, where it couldn't handle some text that I threw at it that was a huge file of includes used in everything I do, and I was feeling pretty cheeky, and it blew up. For about an hour you couldn't read my lovely words. But by remembering "slow down to hurry up" Claude figured out what went wrong as I asked 20 questions to narrow it down. And to celebrate, I decided to do something easy -- created a podcast. And it showed up in all the right places. Might be worth listening to as well. Now let's see if this shows up on daveverse.org, that's what I'm really testing. (It worked.)

New podcast. Knicks in Five! (It's not about the Knicks.)

I wish there were a way to set the dock icons on a Mac. In going from the old machine to the new, the icons are all different. I am juggling so many apps right now, and totally don't appreciate that.

Knicks in five!

As before I asked Claude.ai to do the show notes. I added links. As always if you really want to know what I said you have to listen to the podcast. Dave's first podcast in almost a month, which felt longer to him. His system has been in pieces while he moved his work to a n...

HLS video podcasting

This is a streamlined version of Justin Jackson’s original page about HLS video and podcasts. This is all you need to know to create video podcasts that use open standards.

  1. Publish the audio version of your podcast.
  2. Publish the video version as HLS video streaming with a .m3u8 file.
  3. Add an element to your RSS feed that connects the audio to the video.
<podcast:alternateEnclosure type="application/x-mpegURL"
	height="1080"
	lang="en"
	title="HD Video Stream"
	rel="alternate">
	<podcast:source uri="manifest.m3u8" />
</podcast:alternateEnclosure>

That’s it. Now compatible podcast players can switch between audio and video. I’ve also written a longer post specifically about Micro.blog.

When Claude has a clear task to do, it does it well, and exhaustively in a way no human could manage.

I'm now trying to come up with projects I can try that change things in visible ways so I can see which parts don't work. For example, I have a new Snarky Slogan to add to the list.

I don’t think my little $14/month server for OpenClaw is cutting it anymore. But Hetzner seems to have doubled their prices, so not sure about upgrading in place. Maybe everyone ordering Mac minis had the right idea. Even with new Apple prices, a Mac mini is a better deal over 1-2 years.

Had my first “uh oh” moment using OpenClaw. It accidentally had access to my GitHub account, instead of its own more sandboxed GitHub account. Not sure how this happened. Hopefully human error.

I am working on the new system now. It feels like I had a nice enough house that I have lived in for decades, sitting across the way, where I've been constructing a new super luxury house with all the things a modern personal publisher and code-partner to Claude would want. But until yesterday I could only simulate what it would be like to use it, I was still living in the old comfortable well-worn and out of date in so many ways. Today I'm sitting at the other chair typing this. Now the question is -- when I click the Publish button what will happen? Here we go. Well fuck me, it worked the first fucking time. Knicks in five! :-)

Re-reading Anil Dash’s endgame for the open web blog post and giving it some more thought. The two biggest areas that need our attention: keeping podcasting open and curating the web to highlight human-created content. There are other challenges too, but that’s where I’d start.

Would’ve been my mom’s birthday today. Last year, we celebrated in the hospital. Picked up Tiny Pies. A special moment, even if small. Pushing through today, working, because that’s sometimes all I know how to do.

Over the last week or so, I’ve gotten way too worked up over things I can’t control. That’s usually when I make mistakes, even if it’s something in private. Gotta keep focused on the big picture.
