Miniatures, reference works, and writing

One of the works at the Stanley Cursiter exhibition I saw at the National Gallery of Scotland this week was a collection of miniatures he had painted. According to the gallery website, Cursiter, who served as keeper, and later director, of the gallery, painted “miniature wat...

404 Media put an AirTag in a used book to track it to an Amazon scanning facility. (Clever investigative reporting or legal gray area?) Not sure how much we can read into this because Amazon has been scanning books for over 20 years, ever since the “look inside” feature.

Listening to the latest AppStories podcast about how to grade Siri AI. I like the way John and Federico approach this. Siri AI can be both way better than old Siri and also not nearly as capable as frontier models. Who after using GPT-5.6 Luna for free is going to use Siri instead?

He hadn’t posted in several years until today, so I didn’t realize that Greg Brockman had a blog. It’s powered by Svbtle. Some interesting posts in the archive, including one about OpenAI’s mission from 2019 co-written by Ilya Sutskever:

Just like a computer today, an AGI will be applicable to a wide variety of tasks — and just like computers in 1900 or the Internet in 1950, it’s hard to describe (or even predict) the kind of impact AGI will have.

GitHub is struggling this morning. It’s slightly interfering with my work, so hopefully they get it under control soon. I’ve become quite dependent on it as a bridge to deploys and code review. Replacing GitHub is not currently worth all the integration hassle it would introduce.

We’re bringing back the Micro Monday email newsletter! Meeting with @BonnieRue today about it.

I’ve built a custom workflow this time. It will only be sent to active users from the last couple of months who never unsubscribed from older emails. That way we don’t bug people who have lost interest.

27 down, 17 more to go

The day is August 16th, the time is 6:42 am, and the temperature is a very enjoyable 16°C. The sun is about to rise over the mountains, and I can see it appearing behind the car I just parked at the same parking spot where we ended our walk back in June. It’s been a long su...

Just hearing about this upcoming 6-part series with Barack Obama discussing his favorite books! I’ll definitely listen. But sounds like the “podcast” will be exclusive to Audible, so not actually a podcast.

What to do about X

John Gruber blogged about X and using XCancel: I understand not wanting to visit Twitter/X. But if you feel that way, I do sympathize, but that’s your decision, and you should use tools to redirect Twitter/X links automatically. And if you’re wondering why I don’t just refu...

Moving Water

Yesterday I went to the beach. Water is always in motion. I have many opinions and intuitions about the motion of water. I go to the beach when I am likely to be able to ride waves. I make myself aware of time and tide, wind and the size and shape of water. James mentioned...

Inspiration from physical artefacts

This evening I was on a wonderful call about websites where, at two points, I reached for books that were around me as a visual reference. One of the books was “Mini Louvre”, a gift given to me that contains images and information about various artworks in the Louvre. We end...
