Micro.blog mission, short recap

Micro.blog is often confused with systems like Mastodon or Twitter. They are really very different. Those platforms connect your writing to people. Micro.blog connects it to the web.

The community is amazing too. I’m as committed as ever to the idea that small, open platforms can focus on safety. But what separates the platform from everything else is its open web principles. Every feature — from conversations to cross-posting — exists first to support writing on the web. Making blogs better and your presence on the web better.

Some people prefer the engagement they get on Mastodon or Instagram or whatever other social platform. That’s okay. It’s a big world and you should use whatever best suits you. And I’ll remain clear-eyed about what we’re doing and what we’re not doing.

I had missed that mastodon.cloud is shutting down. While its active user base has been shrinking, it still has a lot of total users and millions of posts. There’s still no way to migrate posts between Mastodon servers. (Mastodon posts → Micro.blog and some other fediverse servers works.)

Wavelength 2.0 for iOS seems hung up in Apple app review. It has been a few days. In the meantime, I have plenty to work on, but I’d love to ship it this week. 🤞

Space-making

Space ⁂ ⁂ ⁂ Space (making) ⁂ ⁂ ⁂ Space-making. A few weeks ago I wrote about the roles of space in creative contexts, from art galleries to music to language to conversation. Space is a building block for rhythm., I wrote. This morning, I decided to write a blog post th...

Museums

Earlier this week I was thinking about inspiration – what inspires me to write? Nature, friends, what I see in the world as I walk around – all these are the basis of many of my blog posts. Museums, too, inspire me, both to think and to create. When I am in a museum, I can ge...

Michel the GOAT

I don’t usually blog all my comments other places, but while drafting a completely different blog post I came across this great post, Michel Valdrighi: The Coder Whose Code Never Went Silent. I had to leave a comment, because Michel’s story is not well-known. Michel Valdrighi is the GOAT. His elegant code and impeccable aesthetic … Continue reading Michel the GOAT

Evening

What if the musical memories of songs last played months ago were not held in the muscles, but in the heart – the passion coming through with every E that follows C? The occasional B, played at just the right moment, adds depth. I love the moment of getting into a song: when ...

We're still socialists

I was into Ayn Rand when I was a teen until I realized that a Great Man theory was a lot of bunk written for teenagers who can't believe how stupid the adults are. The teens are right about that, the adults have no idea wtf they're doing. Never did. And yet somehow the world can support most of the humans born here on this planet. And the reason that works is we build systems iteratively to meet the needs for everyone, not just a few. We're a species-oriented animal. And that means unfortunately for the dreamers among us, we are socialists. All of us. Even the people who say they aren't.

2019: "This will be remembered as the time we all waited for someone else to take the risk, not wanting to disturb our lives. The spoiled citizens of a country that fought wars without a draft, that got tax cuts in time of war, inflated our economy as we inflicted chaos on others.”

OpenAI shared some text messages and emails to support their side of the Apple lawsuit. OpenAI opens with this:

Apple is one of the greatest companies of all time, and built a reputation for obsessing over the smallest details. This careless, aggressive and oddly personal lawsuit sadly doesn’t live up to that reputation.

Apple is clearly worried about OpenAI’s upcoming device. I remain skeptical of any company of Apple’s size using lawyers to stop a competitor.

Lots of recent work on the apps is rolling out. A new version of Sunlit today that has a bunch of design improvements and fixes. And the brand new Wavelength (our app for podcasting) is ready on Android, with iOS hopefully to follow soon.

Micro.blog includes podcast hosting at all plans. Crazy.

Sorting drafts with w-shingling

A few weeks ago, I started to re-think how I organise my writing. Previously, I kept my writing in three folders: Drafts, where I intended to keep all my drafts;Writing, where all my writing, including my drafts, ended up, and;My website, which contains the final, published v...
