Book Club: Steven Pinker’s When Everyone Knows That Everyone Knows

A dyptic photo of Steven Pinker, with gray curly hair sitting in a chari with his arms in his lap split with an image of his latest book When Everyone Knows. The title is the majority of the cover an appears in concentric thought clouds on a black background.
Dan Allosso has been hosting a regular book club since Autumn 2021, centered around sense making, note taking, and topics like economics, history, sociology, and anthropology. (See our list of past books to get an idea of topic coverage.) Our next iteration over the coming month or so will focus on Steven Pinker’s most recent … Continue reading Book Club: Steven Pinker’s When Everyone Knows That Everyone Knows

Find My Upgrade

I wish that when you use Find My to find your iPhone, it would also flash the flashlight, which would be great for finding it in a bag or a dark room.

On Bluesky: Do you feel powerless to communicate online unless it serves the interests of the people who own the networks you post to? Why not own your own means of distribution, managed as a co-op, and only responsible to you, as a member and customer. No VC, no billionaire, no government control.

2025

Here’s the new year, same as the old year. Well, not the same, but pretty similar. At the end of 2024, I wrote: It was a year dominated by Ukraine and Gaza. Utterly horrific and unnecessary death courtesy of Putin and Netanyahu See what I mean? 2025 added an extra do...

Bush at war

Bush at the start of the Iraq war when MSNBC called him a visionary. He looked pretty lost at the time, I remember -- and we all hoped that wasn't true, we hoped he knew what he was doing.

We've been here before.

Jackson Kiddard

Anything that annoys you is teaching you patience. Anyone who abandons you is teaching you how to stand up onyour own two feet. Anything that angers you is teaching you forgiveness and compassion. Anything that has power over you is teaching you how to take your power back. Anything you hate is teaching you unconditional … Continue reading Jackson Kiddard

Driving back into Austin there was an incredible view of the huge moon low over downtown, just touching the UT tower. Unlike anything I’ve ever seen. Almost pulled over to take a photo, but instead I snapped this from the car. Kind of neat in its own way.

Blurred lights and vague shapes create the impression of a nighttime scene with bokeh effects.

Niklas Luhmann’s Zettelkasten Method One Pager (1968)

Wooden table with a Shaw-Walker card index on it surrounded by a copy of Norbert Wiener's Cybernetics book, a pile of index cards, a black fountain pen, and some chrysanthemums in a vase.
The internet is now rife with what I call “zettelkasten method one pagers” that describe what many people rightly (or very often wrongly) think that Niklas Luhmann’s zettelkasten method entails.  While doing some research about Luhmann’s numbering system’s antecedents, I recently came across a “one pager” (typescript) written by Luhmann himself in the form of … Continue reading Niklas Luhmann’s Zettelkasten Method One Pager (1968)

Personal and community web search engines

Ever since I made the first version of IndieWeb Search, a search engine that let you search personal websites, I have been thinking about the idea of “community search engines.” A community search engine indexes materials related to a specific community. The information sour...
