If you like rabbit holes, a wonderful way to spend your Sunday is in the writing of Zach Holman, an early engineer at Github and Gitlab. All are good, but a particular favorite of mine is UTC is enough for everyone …right? You don’t need to code to appreciate that time is a construct, that … Continue reading Time Zones →
Needed to get away today. Last-minute decision to drive down to San Antonio with my daughter. 🏀
I absolutely bloody love Haim, and they didn’t disappoint this evening.
In 1977, NASA launched two spaceships carrying two golden records into the void of interstellar space. The Voyager Golden Records contained instructions for playing its contents, finding Earth in the cosmos (oh my …), as well as images, a variety of natural sounds, musical s...
So instead of asking yourself, “How can I write code that does what I want?” Consider asking yourself, “Can I write code that ties together things the browser already does to accomplish what I want (or close enough to it)?”

Ego is one of those words that’s difficult to parse. I find language to be an imperfect tool in the quest to describe the inner workings of the mind, because in there, things tend to be fuzzy, while words are often sharp, pointing to distinct concepts that are seldom found i...
I had a very pleasant experience last week while I was reading through the RSS feeds I’m subscribed to. I came across two blog posts that were responding to blog posts of my own.
Robin Sloan wrote a post clarifying his position after I linked to him in my post about the sli...
House of Dynamite is a fantastic movie, it deserved the great reviews it's getting, and I found it easy to watch, though a lot of reviewers said it wasn't. It's exactly the kind of movie I like -- political thriller with ideas rich with intrigue. Great acting and writing. It...
I changed the header graphic on Scripting News today to raise a question with NYC voters. Bill de Blasio was mayor. He was elected with great vision, but the politics of NY are not in sync with the ambitions of dreamers. The police union didn't like him. I'm sure they would ...

My gut feeling tells me that not that many people have yet heard of or used the linear() easing function, one of the most exciting newer additions to CSS. Looking at the stats in the State of CSS survey, this is somewhat confirmed: only about 30 percent of respondents have u...
The Atlantic November issue is lovely, focused on the American Revolution. I particularly enjoyed: So pick up a copy as you pass through an airport or by a newstand. I consider it a very worthwhile subscription. It might be better to read in print or through Apple News+ as their website a bit broken for … Continue reading November Atlantic →
This post will be part of a series, as I join KnitFactoryImpl's knitalong of a set in sleeve crew neck sweater for channel members. KnitFactoryImpl (aka Carson)'s videos have been a huge help and source of inspiration on my short knitting journey so far, so it's really fun t...
A surfer said to me on Friday: “Finally!” I asked… “Finally?” “Winter’s Here” he said. Big waves, closeouts. Fun.
It was big. Surfers could not get out. Waves too big and crashy. Windy. Not appealing to surfers because there’s no wave lip to ride, the waves just crash over into whitewater. I saw another bodysurfer out. I love being out in big chaotic surf. Keeps me on my toes.
Watching the Longhorns game with family today was a nice distraction from everything else going on for me right now. Great comeback win. Hopefully Arch Manning is okay. 🏈
