Try as hard as I can I still have distinct flows and more than one place where I edit. I think that's a consequence of working on WordLand. I have to use it for serious writing, or it doesn't work. Maybe I can find a way to merge flows, but not at the moment. I still have to do some copy/pasting.

The antidote to Bigco dominance

Fascinating blog post from Jason Shellen, tech entrepreneur, formerly with Blogger and Google. Here’s my perspective on part of the story he tells about RSS and Google Reader. Netscape gave us RSS 0.91 and it was good enough to create a new powerful layer on the web. Then Ne...

Decontrolled

I was supposed to be in Cork over the weekend. Not only was it high time I paid my mother a visit, but the Cork Folk Festival was happening too. So I booked some relatively cheap plane tickets for myself and Jessica back in August and noted down the days in my calendar. We...

Anil Dash making a strong case for video creators to work on independence from TikTok and other big platforms. The algorithm is fragile. It might help you today, but tomorrow you’ve lost everything without a direct connection to your audience.

Federico Viticci blogging about the news from yesterday’s OpenAI DevDay and the impact of ChatGPT becoming a platform:

If I were Apple, I’d start growing increasingly concerned at the prospect of another company controlling the interactions between users and their favorite apps.

Ben Thompson: “OpenAI is making a play to be the Windows of AI.” Also, on the inevitable bubble and the infrastructure we’ll be left with:

The real payoff would be a massive build-out in power generation, which would be a benefit for the next half a century.

Big news from Riley Testut about AltStore PAL, integrating with the fediverse, and new investment to grow the platform and give back to other open web tools. Very cool, congrats to everyone involved!

Tim & Pablos

Two of my favorite humans, Tim Ferriss and Pablos Holman, had a great interview together. Pablos has a great new book out, and Audrey Capital is a happy LP in his Deep Future fund. Of my many hacker friends, Pablos is probably the most public.

Visual Regression Testing for External URLs With Playwright

We’ve all been there: You write a bit of CSS, check whether everything looks right. You deploy. Then someone sends you a screenshot: the mobile navigation is broken. And why is the size of those headings just a bit off? And where has that button gone? Especially when you are...

Desk set up with a gray Royal KMG standard typewriter and a brown Royal HH. Next to the KMG is a cocktail glass with a yellowish whisky sour in it. In the background are two card index cabinets and a barrister bookshelf full of books. In the background we see three other typewriters.
Made up a new batch of homemade sugar syrup for the bar and realized I’d never typed up a recipe for the card index. Sorted…

I do all my shopping in ChatGPT. There must be a way to monetize that. For example, I want to buy a new backpack for carrying my laptop and other mobile web stuff. I should be able to set up anywhere there's wifi. I've got a modern MacBook Air, an iPad and two phones, one iOS and one Android. The main one is Android, I have to carry the iPhone because I use an Apple watch. I imagine there must be some improvements made in backpacks accordingly since I bought the last one, which was when I lived in Berkeley, in the late 00s.

I've been evangelizing evangelism lately. Focus on goals and help others help us achieve them. It's a virtuous cycle, because once people figure out that they can get help by helping us, they will help us more. That is, when it works.

Weird Web October: A luta continua

I have done 4 more entries for Weird Web October since the one with the hearts. Scramble: it’s clicky and it was fun to write clip-paths Filters: an instance of “a few html elements do quirky things;” rather like many of the toys I’ve made Remix:a bookmarklet to modify pages like a Slinky. It’s over...

FediForum starts tomorrow and runs for a couple days. It’s an online conference for folks who want to discuss and build for the future of the social web, from Mastodon to Bluesky. There has been a lot of new developer activity over on the Bluesky side, so I’m curious if any of that will bubble up.

For all the folks overseas, I’d like to do more for localization in Micro.blog. Not the main UI, but the parts that show up on your own blog, e.g. “Finished reading”, “Watched this movie”… I tried AI to dynamically translate a few things on the fly, but it’s a dead end. Maybe crowdsourced later.

I did a video demo of pngWriter in December 2016. I wish I had just done a Hello World demo instead of a freaking tutorial. I do better demos these days. I broke every rule of my own tutorial for software demos.
