12 years of Ghost

[John O' Nolan at Ghost]

This is a lovely reflection on 12 years of Ghost, the non-profit, open source publishing platform that powers independent publishers and allows them to make a living on their own terms.

"Over the years, we've focused consistently on building the best tools for publishing on the web. In the past 5 years, in particular, we've also focused heavily on building ways for creators, journalists, and publishers to run a sustainable business on the web."

As John notes, this has been very successful: outlets like 404Media and Platformer use it as their platform, and they've generated over $100 million for small publishers. It's the right product, and particularly now, it fills a need at the right time.

Keeping up appearances | deadSimpleTech

Looking at LLM usage and promotion as a cultural phenomenon, it has all of the markings of a status game. The material gains from the LLM (which are usually quite marginal) really aren’t why people are doing it: they’re doing it because in many spaces, using ChatGPT and being very optimistic about AI being the “future” raises their social status. It’s important not only to be using it, but to be seen using it and be seen supporting it and telling people who don’t use it that they’re stupid luddites who’ll inevitably be left behind by technology.

Experimental June

I did a few random experiments with my life over the years and they were always interesting. Life has this tendency to set itself in some sort of autopilot mode and you slip into weird habits without realizing it. So the idea of forcing myself to do things differently is qui...

Latest Shutdown

I have talked before about my mistrust of big platforms, and fear of digital video. Along those lines, an email I got 8 days ago: SUBJECT: Facebook’s Video Storage Policy Is Changing: Download Your Old Live Videos In The Next 7 Days Download your old Facebook Live videos by May 25. We are sending you...

I will keep trying…

As much as my CSS Battles are me, writing HTML and CSS and talking about it, sometimes I talk like I blog. From my video o May 25, 2025: …so much of any coding task is trying. And trying again and trying again and failing and failing and trying and trying and failing and failing...

Helping Harvard?

I feel like I should help Harvard, because Harvard helped me, and if you use podcasting or RSS, it helped you too. In 2002, I was ready to leave Silicon Valley, and RSS needed a safe place to be parked, or I felt the tech industry would keep trying to own it, and make it fa...

Gus Mueller blogs about being indie and Brent Simmons’s upcoming retirement. This is accurate:

Only crazy people are willing to put up with having to file business taxes, mess with social security, find healthcare, deal with all the stuff you have to handle to be indie. And you don’t even have to be a particularly good programmer. You just have to be persistent.

Also, congrats Brent! 🎉

Pete Rose

It was so predictable. Shortly after Pete Rose died, baseball rescinded his lifetime ban, and now he can be inducted into the Hall of Fame.

He had more hits than any baseball player ever.

A role model in so many ways, and like all heroes he had fatal flaws. You may think he set a bad example for kids, but I say the opposite. You don't give kids enough credit. What he taught was that a man with average athletic ability could will himself to achieve.

I grew up with a Pete Rose ethos, why shouldn't I go for it all? I feel so sad that he couldn't have gotten the acceptance he so totally deserved. How could we not forgive him? He was Charlie Hustle! ❤️

Pete Rose was Charlie Hustle.
