Word of the day

Sometimes when someone is talking I will hear a word and think I haven’t heard that one before! If I hear – or read – a word I haven’t heard before, I usually look it up. I wonder what this word means!, I think to myself. If I read a fun word, I used to make it my “word of the day” which I would share with friends. I don’t do this much anymore, although I had a lot of fun doing it – listening and spelunking for words in the veritable caverns of English to find a cool word. With that in mind, I have a word of the day for today! The word of the day is: haar. The Cambridge Dictionary defines haar as: a cold mist coming from the sea to the east of Scotland or northern England: Besides being a useful word to describe a weather condition common to Scotland – fog! – it is also fun to say. Haar. Said like a pirate would say arr, except with a “h” at the start.

Brainstorming a Notion-powered static site generator

I write my daily notes in Notion. I keep one long document called “Today” in which I keep track of TODOs and all my notes and observations from the day. While the page is called “Today”, it is a living document that often ends up getting very long. There have been a few times...

How I navigate my website wiki

I publish both blog posts and wiki-like pages on my website. The difference between these two types of pages is that the former is written at a point in time whereas the later grows over time. One of my main uses for wiki pages are lists: of ideas, of movies to watch, of note...

Great Startups Run on Feedback

[Jen Dennard at Startup Soup]

A culture of open, direct feedback is important for any organization to foster. Jen Dennard has some great tips here:

"Like most things, the key to getting the value is to make it a habit. Set aside time during 1:1s or make a recurring team meeting (like a monthly retro) to create space for feedback and learnings. Make sure to include critical and positive feedback to help build confidence while driving progress. Ask for feedback on new processes and team goals."

I think this last piece is particularly crucial. Feedback more meaningful - and more useful - when it goes in both directions. Taking feedback at the same time you're giving it means that you're building trust - and getting an early signal on where you might be going wrong as a leader.

Yellow Royal FP typewriter on a wooden table next to some index card notes and a crystal glass containing a Negroni.
Spent some time tonight typing up notes from the type-in on Saturday for the typosphere. Should have a post about it all soon.

Next Thursday, May 22nd at 6 pm, there’s going to be a Homebrew Website Club Düsseldorf. Co-organised by Schepp and myself, we plan this to be the first HWC event in a series of regular events. I quote from the IndieWeb wiki page to explain what an HWC is: Homebrew Website Club is a growing world-wide network of meetups for everyone who wants to take back their web experience from social media silos, and own their online identities & content, or just want support with blogging! So, ...

Corey Ford just launched his new consultancy, Point C, and I couldn’t be more excited. He’s changed my professional life — more than once — through a kind of empathy-driven coaching I’ve never found anywhere else. He didn’t ask me to write this post, but I feel compelled to....
