The latest update to Micro Social adds location check-ins for Micro.blog. Very interesting! There’s so much potential here that we haven’t had time to follow through on, so great to see another app pick up the slack.
People and blogs involved with and about the IndieWeb community, the fediverse, and/or the open web in general.
Poisoning Well: HeydonWorks
Heydon is employing a different tactic to what I’m doing to sabotage large language model crawlers. These bots don’t respect the nofollow
rel
value …so now they pay the price.
Raising my own middle finger to LLM manufacturers will achieve little on its own. If doing this even works at all. But if lots of writers put something similar in place, I wonder what the effect would be. Maybe we would start seeing more—and more obvious—gibberish emerging in generative AI output. Perhaps LLM owners would start to think twice about disrespecting the
nofollow
protocol.
Item Flow, Part 1: A new unified concept for layout | WebKit

I really like the idea of unifying some layout values in CSS. If you’ve got any feedback, please chip in!
Excited for the Nintendo Switch 2. The kids have our old Switches, so I had picked up a Lite mostly for travel and miss having something that can connect to the TV.
Rest in peace, Val Kilmer. Glad he was able to reprise his role from Top Gun, in a way getting the thanks and goodbye he deserved before he passed. His part in Heat will always be my favorite.
Gambling and sports don’t mix for me. I want a version of games without the gambling. I don’t know how parents can let their kids watch games with all the gambling ads.

Extraordinary what Cory Booker has done. A lot of people feel powerless right now, with little substantive action possible. Talking for 24 hours accepts those limits and leans in to the symbolic. 🇺🇸

the joy of
seeing pink blossoms from the train. talking coffee with a barista — of speaking about origins and tasting notes. striking up conversation with people while waiting in line. imagination, and of daydreaming. reading text in a foreign language — maybe even a foreign alphabet — and being able to understand what you have read. seeing people sit outside in the evening, enjoying desserts or drinks or food. seeing something from an entirely new perspective. walking by the river on a sunny morning. And of all the memories I have there. watching a barista focus as they pour latte art. the question “do you want a refill?” when my coffee cup is empty. arriving at the platform just as a Tube has pulled in. spotting a quaint bookstore. gazing out a train window on a sunny day where there is barely a cloud in the sky. looking up to the sky after sunset and seeing the moon.
I was sick most of yesterday and tuned out of any social web drama, so was at first surprised to learn that this week’s FediForum has been cancelled. Details on their Mastodon account:
We’ve all had a difficult few days. Tempers are high. Some of what’s been happening in the Fediforum comments section has reached insult-only stage and I have heard of physical safety concerns.
Sounds like the right call to postpone. Hope they can regroup, get some rest, and I look forward to attending in the future. FediForum has served a unique role in the community.
The chickens of sanewashing come home to roost.

How did the music industry get through hip-hop sampling in the 80s without blowing itself up? I was paying attention to copyright issues in software at the time, we used copy protection, but we knew it didn't work. It was just how things were done.
More weird ChatGPT fun
The prompt: Here's a drawing and a profile picture. I'd like you to insert the person in the profile into the drawing, and adapt it as you see fit, but the face of the person in the profile should be in the same style as the ones around it.
I gave it a snapshot of the art from the season finale of Severance, and my profile picture from Facebook.

The beautiful art that came with the season finale of Severance could have been drawn by ChatGPT, it's that good, in the way that machine art is good. There's a point of view reflected in its creations, looking into a soul that in no way exists. We're learning about it, but it's a moving target, evolving before our eyes, in huge steps.
My server has been coughing up hairballs tonight. It coughed up a link to this piece from two years ago, when Twitter pulled the plug on their API. It knocked everything I had built on the Twitter API off the air. Every thing. Just like that. That's what tonight was like here. It was just some of my apps, suddenly, not working. Whew.
