Boom & Deepseek

What an exciting time to be alive. I was hipped to Deepseek by Andrej Kaparthy’s tweet the day after Christmas, it was clear then that something big had happened and that it was truly open source and open weights (not this fake Llama stuff). It’s been fun to see the rest of the world catch … Continue reading Boom & Deepseek

The Repubs are trying to kill you

On Bluesky, I wrote a post to Oliver Willis, who writes at Daily Kos: This podcast elaborates on that simple idea. We still have media, we don't have to wait for the leaders of the Democratic Party to tell Americans what the Repubs are doing in terms that mean something to ...

Taking a short break from support email and questions to edit the latest Core Intuition. If you have ever listened to our podcast before and liked it, you will probably want to hear this one. (How’s that for hyping it up?)

On its birthday, The 19th announces a new model for funding media

The 19th celebrated its fifth birthday yesterday. CEO Emily Ramshaw’s reflective post is quite lovely, but also announces a very bold strategy: On our fifth anniversary, we’re launching our first-ever endowment campaign, with a goal of raising $20 million over the next three...

Is Bluesky billionaire-proof?

Could what happened to Twitter, happen there? To determine, ask yourself if you could continue to use it if it was acquired by a billionaire for their own personal political use? What would you switch to? Would you have to give up your history and followers? And developers, ...

Sharing “Unplatform”

If I was on social media I’d probably post this link there but I am not and so I’m posting it here. Ajazz has put together a nice resource called “Unplatform” which is, in their words, an interactive guidebook, online library, and research journal intended to help you escape social media and join the indie web. As you know, I’m a big fan of owning your own space and so I love to see this type of projects.

Rivers on Bluesky

This is a post for longtime Scripting News readers. As you know, I've been doing feed readers for a long time. They've been mostly organized around the river of news concept, which also happens to be the way twitter-like systems work. My rivers are built around RSS and forma...

What is a sanctuary city?

I wonder if people understand what a sanctuary city is. In a sanctuary city the local government accepts the fact that there are people living in the city who are not there legally. They want these people to be able to call the police without fear of being turned into the...

Really nice FAQ-style format for today’s Stratechery update on DeepSeek. Even if you don’t read the whole thing, you can tell something big is happening. I downloaded a medium-sized R1 model last week to test with Ollama on my Mac. Very impressed.

The Bear Manifesto

[Herman Martinus] I recognize a lot of the sentiment here. Twenty years ago, I ran an open source social networking startup and tried to differentiate ourselves by saying many of these same things. "Bear won't sell. I'm not building this to flip it to the hi...

Good morning! This week I have two goals: respond to every email I received in January, and fix some bugs. There is low hanging fruit and a few more difficult problems to address.

Tonight, for the first time since January 7th, I made the depressing choice to drive from a friend’s on Lincoln across town on Altadena Drive. The utter devastation of the Eaton Fire is truly ghastly. So much of my town just doesn’t exist anymore. As I got to Altadena Drive and Washington, it began to … Continue reading
