Chan Karunamuni on the Duo’s Open/Close Translucent Transition

x.com/chan_k/status/2113622379050246243

Chan Karunamuni, human interface designer at Apple, on X: iPhone Duo is here! Excited to have worked on the design of our open/close transition. It’s designed to make the two displays feel like one seamless experience by perceptually bending the focal plane, not the cont...

Munch’s Sun

The other week I was in Oslo and visited the Munch museum, taking a break from a marathon meeting schedule. Munch‘s museum holds the largest collection of his work (a long time ago in London E and I visited another large exhibit in the Tate Modern gallery). One temporary exhibition had colourful works by Katharina […]

WindowShade Redux

Another haxie reborn, from Rosyna Keller (Mastodon): Instead of only cramming minimized windows into a crowded dock—or hiding them altogether—WindowShade Redux reduces your windows to their title bars or small live thumbnails at all times. It supports over twenty animation styles with the following power features: Minimize the window to the Dock, as alwaysWindowShade the […]

Mastodon 5

Imani Joy: We’re moving away from the embedded composer and adopting a pop-out composer with new controls for visibility and other post settings. Navigation is simplified and organised in a more intuitive way and create space for future new features. […] In your feeds, the posts themselves have been rebuilt from the ground up, giving […]

Building Mac App Help Books

Amy Worrall: The documentation is available on the website for the relevant app, and also in the app as a Help Book (openable from the Help menu). These days, Help Books on MacOS open in the Tips app[…] Apple’s documentation for making these, such as Authoring Apple Help, is pretty old. If you look at […]

iOS 27.1

Joe Rossignol (no iOS/iPadOS release notes, no security, no iOS/iPadOS enterprise, no developer): Apple this week released the full and final version of iOS 27.1, but it is only available for the foldable iPhone Duo that launched today. iPhone Duo already ships with iOS 27.1 preinstalled, but users need to update to a newer build […]

Apple Music’s New Look

Joe Rossignol: In a YouTube video shared today, Apple said the new Apple Music visuals were “made by sound.” More specifically, Apple said it played a sound through a container of water, resulting in the liquid moving at the frequency of the notes. Apple Music brand elements were placed behind the vibrating water, resulting in […]

iPhone Duo Reviews

John Gruber (Mastodon, tweet, Bluesky): The Duo name is perfect. It truly is like having two devices in one. The outer device is, by far, the worst iPhone Apple has ever made. It’s a miserable fat little thing. The inner device is a splendid, joyful, beautiful tablet, with a UI that out-iPads the iPad. For […]

iPhone Duo and Safari

Mike Piontek (Mastodon): A year ago I wrote that Safari 26 and Liquid Glass have little respect for web sites and unfortunately this hasn’t changed. […] It’s unclear to me why Apple is not opting to treat the iPhone Duo toolbar as a safe area. I have not come across anything discussing their reasons nor […]

WebKit Blocking Identity Resolution Infrastructure

Lara O’Reilly: Apple’s latest privacy crackdown left the online ad industry scrambling for answers. Now, the tech giant has finally offered some. John Wilander et al.: A “post-cookie” tracking method emerged, called identity resolution. In this scheme, third parties (i.e., not the website owner) invisibly collect your email address when you log in or sign […]

Apple Finds Some Personality

Jason Snell, Six Colors: Every five years when we hit an anniversary, I struggle to recontextualize the iPod. But this year, for the 25th anniversary, I’ve been thinking about Apple’s little music player a lot more. Stephen Hackett: This link — which you gotta manually open in your browser — is the best thing I’ve […]⌥ Permalink

Listening to Charles Mingus: Blues & Roots. One of the masterpieces of jazz. Sounds brand-new every time, though it’s almost as old as I am. 🎵

Everybody who tries to read a page like this — typical of legacy journalism online — hits the “Reader View” button, or saves to Instapaper or a similar service, because if you want to read the article there’s no alternative. (I only saw the above because I accidentally hit the Reader View button a second time.) So how does this kind of thing make sense? Eventually, surely, advertisers will figure out that they’re paying for ads no one will see, and then what?

Published an issue of Citation Needed:

On Meidas Defense: cryptocurrency, sanctions, and Trump quid pro quo

A still from a split-screen video of Joe Plenzler interviewing Molly White

Last week I joined Joe Plenzler on the Meidas Defense podcast to talk about crypto. Meidas Defense is the MeidasTouch Network’s national security show, so we spent more time than I usually do on crypto as a geopolitical problem, in addition to a consumer protection one. The full episode and transcript are up on the Meidas newsletter, and there’s a shorter cut on YouTube: The use of crypto for sanctions evasion isn’t something I’ve covered in depth yet, and so this was a great opportunity to d

The Verge’s Duo Review: ‘Apple’s Folding Phone Is a Messy, Expensive Good Time’

theverge.com/tech/1015028/iphone-duo-review

Nilay Patel and Allison Johnson (also: 26-minute video review on YouTube): This means almost every time you open the phone you instinctively rotate it, and while it will work no matter how it’s rotated, it’s better to rotate it counterclockwise so the cameras are on top ...

The web of Markdown, part 3

Previous posts on this topic: Oct 6 and Oct 8.

What's new? I've got a browser running, and have been using it for a few weeks. We're not releasing it today because first I want people to think about the format we're using to represent a story, and get feedback, and see if other people can build on the same basis.

Three things to look at today.

And if you have questions or comments.

Willis Jenkins:

I had often pressed on [my father] essays and novels of Berry's. Like Berry’s father, mine was a white-collar professional who farmed on the side and deeply loved his rural community. He was perhaps the last of the country doctors to make a home visit and receive a cherry pie as payment. Yet it was also my dad who first pointed me toward a darkness behind the agrarian romance. Once, while handing back to me the book in which appears “A Defense of the Family Farm,” wherein Berry recommends the Amish practice of using family and horses instead of machinery, my father tersely noted that this idyllic vision  depends on children doing forced labor.

Yes, but so does sending children to school. (That’s a minor quibble. The essay is superb and superbly provocative.)

Joanna Stern Reviews the Duo: ‘The Good, the Bad, and the Buggy’

youtube.com/watch?v=bxDTWuL9GxY

Joanna Stern’s video review packs a ton into 16 minutes. She commissioned a custom robot to fold/unfold the thing over 32,000 times in a week, to see if it loosened the hinge. (I won’t spoil the answer.) She took it on a yacht on the Hudson. She took it to a dark bar to test the cameras. And she really, really missed Face ID. I don’t know how she makes these videos in just a week, along with all the actual testing. So good.

We rank our complaints (and praise) in different order, but overall her take jibes with mine on every single point. You can read a version of her review, too, if you’re a subscriber to The New Things, which you should be.
