Having done extensive research into the possibility of growing a lot of vegetables — after some halfhearted attempts in the past — I have come to two conclusions:

  1. I can’t afford the infrastructure that would be required to prevent my crops from being wholly consumed by squirrels;
  2. Even if I could afford that infrastructure, and installed it properly and devoted a great deal of care to keeping it up, the squirrels would probably find a way to eat everything anyway.

If I were fifteen years younger I would already have written a long post on the Sally Rooney kerfuffle. Ten years younger: I would want to write such a post but might be able to restrain myself. Five years younger: I’d be feeling that I probably should have an opinion on the subject and would worry a little about losing my edge. Today: I know that there is a kerfuffle but don’t know the details and don’t care. This is called Progress Towards Enlightenment. Five years more and, Deo volente, I won’t even know that crap like this is happening.

The Arc of Browsing Bends Towards Firefox Yet Again

The Arc Browser will go away by December, as the company behind it will pursue their AI-first browser. I like the Chromium based Arc browser, as it moves its UI out of my sight when I don’t interact with it, and has its tabs to the side. I’ve been using Arc for some years since […]

A.I. Has Made It Easy to Brute Force the Internet

Jason Koebler, 404 Media: To give you a sense of what I’m seeing, Matthew Green, a Johns Hopkins professor and one of the most respected cryptographers in the world, posted “we’re in the part of the movie where you need to throw whatever you can in the path of the zombies and hope it slows […]⌥ Permalink

Tom Williams, Information Age: Apple has been ordered to open its “walled garden” to allow third-party app stores and alternative in-app payment systems in Australia, in a landmark court decision which the technology giant says it will appeal. Apple has until at least March 2027 to allow Australian users to download apps through alternative app […]⌥ Permalink

Read "AI Is Changing Everything About Hacking. No One Knows What Happens Next"

Read: “AI Is Changing Everything About Hacking. No One Knows What Happens Next”. Jason Koebler in 404 Media. Published October 22, 2026. So much is happening, and so quickly, that it has been difficult for me — someone who has been reporting and editing stories on secu...

truly a wild time to be alive when the cryptography world is split between those worried about quantum computers and those whose private key is “4”

Dan Goodin in Ars Technica.
“That is extremely in the ‘this should not be possible’ category,” Valdorda said. “Maybe some horribly dangerous key generation interface has a ‘size’ parameter and they set it to 1 by mistake???”

Finished reading: Distant Neighbors by Wendell Berry and Gary Snyder. 📚 Berry to Snyder, 1978:

I am, I believe, a “non-violent” fighter. But I am a fighter. And I see with considerable sorrow that I am not going to get done fighting and live at peace in anything like the simple way I once thought I would. So how to keep from becoming evil?

Maybe the answer is to fight always for what you particularly love, not for abstractions and not against anything: don’t fight against even the devil, and don’t fight ’to save the world."

The PHP Interruption

This site, and my other ones, and my business ones (including our NextCloud), were offline as precaution since yesterday afternoon. I was at LegoWorld in Utrecht with E and Y, when I realised what was going on, and left for home to take my stuff down. Now that PHP patches, after becoming available late yesterday […]

★ The iPhone Duo

It’s been a lot of fun trying the Duo out for a week, but it feels like I’ve gotten to use an extraordinarily polished prototype — not a finished product that I’d want to buy and carry.
