I was browsing around the WordPress blogs and found a new one in German that pointed to something new in blogrolls. It's Matthias Pfefferle, of course -- this time connecting up with the world Manton and I were working on a couple of years ago. Read about it here. He works at Automattic and has done pretty much all the work to connect WordPress to everything he can find, including ActivityPub and AT Proto. I have to swing back to FeedLand and RSS.chat asap, so we can start building together. Not going to miss his window on this stuff.

I’ve been suffering from eyestrain, so for my evening reading have turned to Stephen Fry narrating the Sherlock Holmes stories, which ranks as one of the three best narrations I have ever heard, the other two being Fiona Shaw’s The Mill on the Floss and Andy Serkis’s The Lord of the Rings. Spot-on in all respects: Simon Callow’s review of Fry’s Holmes. 📚🎧

Paul Chan: Sometime during the mid-2010s, I noticed photographers, videographers, and artists of all kinds referring to what they made as “content,” as opposed to photos, videos, or art. The case was the same with writers: Blog posts, essays, and articles were lumped togeth...

Blog Archiving to Notes and Embeddings

Last March I made an export from my blog, so that I have all my blogposts since 2002 (some 3800 posts) in my notes locally. This makes it easier to find and link to my own blogposts while I am working, thinking, or writing in my notes. What I did not do in March was […]

Mux: Turn Your Video Into Context

mux.com/?utm_campaign=fireball&utm_source=DF

My thanks to Mux for sponsoring last week at DF. Video isn’t just something to stream; it’s structured data you build with.

Mux Robots — hosted AI workflows — turns video into context. Generate chapters, find key moments, translate audio, and more, through one API call, with no model hosting to maintain. Each workflow is evaluated against real video, not generic benchmarks. Configure the workflows once, and every new upload runs automatically.

Mux is video infrastructure trusted by Patreon, Substack, and Perplexity. Start building for free. Use code FIREBALL for an extra $50 credit.

Katie Notopoulos on Alexandr Wang’s ‘Faux-Hallmark Pap’

x.com/katienotopoulos/status/2103993429659386026

Katie Notopoulos, in a short tweet thread regarding Alexandr Wang’s “Why We’re Building Muse” essay: This makes me feel insane! This is faux-hallmark pap and if you believe for 1 sec that he cares about helping people “spending more time with family” or “opening a bakery...

The bottom line is that tech companies have rarely understood that developers can be major influencers. We give a platform new meaning. It's a good deal to invest in the people doing the work, who often are doing it for love more than money. That grew into the blogosphere. There was no telling where Frontier would take us, and it would have cost them so little to help insure it had a future, but the did the opposite.

As I go through porting Frontier, there's a sad note. What if Apple had made it a goal that Frontier move along with their OS. That it was a unique advantage of the Mac and should be promoted as such. Don't laugh, because Apple did do that for ThinkTank and MORE. We spent a ...

Sometimes I forget how much fun I have making software tricks that people don't even notice but contribute to the "it thinks like I do" feeling a of crafted UI. I think of it like walking on the Highline in NYC. You're just walking, right? But you're above it, in a city where a lot of what's going on is above you. And it's comfortable. Why? You don't need to know, it just is. But someone made it that way.

daveMigrates, and a personal note

When I started this project, I had a goal in mind that has been achieved. It was part of a project I named daveMigrates. The goal was to use new hardware and system software to do the work I was doing in Frontier. At first we got a portion of Frontier working, planning to u...

Milestone. We were able to get the DocServer site for Frontier to build. Here's the page for the file verbs. It worked the first time, but there were errors. Fixed them and while the site looks dated, of course -- it was created in the 90s, I think, we got past this one. We will update the CSS to be more like the DocServer site for Drummer, which was done a couple of years ago. Almost everyone on the team contributed to this site, Wes Felter, Andre Radke and of course Jake Savin and Brent Simmons, and myself. I see that a lot and it makes me happy to see this group effort preserved.

FruitMenu Redux

Rosyna Keller: FruitMenu Redux revives a utility (FruitMenu) that brings lost Mac OS Classic features to Mac OS X. Specifically, it restores the fully customizable Apple menu. It’s no longer a haxie that works by patching the operating system. Now, it’s a regular app that hooks into other apps (e.g. to switch to a particular […]

Flickr 5.0.9

I haven’t seen it documented, but it looks like Flickr went back to shipping its rewrite of the app. It’s better than before but loses the scroll position when going from an individual photo back to the grid. Previously: Flickr 5.0

Antennagate Q&A

Hartley Charlton: A 47-minute video of the Q&A session from Apple’s 2010 iPhone 4 “antennagate” press conference has surfaced on YouTube, showing Steve Jobs, Tim Cook, and Bob Mansfield answering reporters’ questions. […] Jobs used his prepared presentation to announce free cases for eligible customers and a 30-day return option. Apple later posted video of […]

Golden Gate and the Notch

Jason Snell: Apple has added some light menu-bar management, specifically to deal with items that overflow the notch on some MacBook models. I’m glad that it’s taken this tentative step, though I wish it were more—it’s okay, Apple, you can sherlock all those menu-bar-management utilities out there—and of course, it should’ve happened back when the […]
