Blaming Data Centres, Alberta Electricity Industry Expects Tripling of Power Prices
If you believe Meta, its forthcoming Albertan data centre will be, at worst, unnoticeable to people across this province: We pay the full costs of our data centers’ energy use so consumers aren’t negatively impacted, and fund new and upgraded infrastructure. We worked closely with Greenlight Limited Partnership, Altalink, Capitol Power, and the Alberta Electric […]⌥ Permalink
Watched: Room 999. This revisiting of Wim Wenders’s 1982 documentary Room 666 is often interesting and sometimes fascinating. (It must be said that not all filmmakers are especially articulate about what they do — this is evident in the original film as well.) Perhaps the comment that strikes me most forcibly is when Audrey Diwan wonders what will happen to her children’s sense of narrative when all the stories they experience are less than a minute long. And this is something to be concerned about. Many of the most important things in our lives develop over years; will people be capable of reckoning wisely with their experience if the only stories they know reach a resolution in 60 seconds? 🍿

alcoholic trying to get sober after a relapse tells Google's "Health Coach" about it.
it tells them to drink every hour and messages them to make sure they're drinking as soon as they wake up.

Just had to patch a bug on the Tech Influence Watch Michigan House District 13 election page, stemming from Shri Thanedar reporting -$1.1 million in receipts.
Why is Thanedar reporting negative receipts? He put $3.7 million of campaign funds into crypto.
Two-thirds of the Michigan congressman's campaign cash last quarter came from AIPAC bundlers after he invested millions in crypto.

[Sponsor] WorkOS MCP: Manage Your Auth Platform From Any AI Agent
Debugging SSO, managing users, adjusting auth policies, configuring branding: every configuration task has lived behind a UI that only a human can drive.
The WorkOS MCP server gives agents the same access as your dashboard login. Hundreds of operations, discoverable at runtime. Connect in one command via OAuth, with scoped tokens instead of a master API key. Pass a screenshot of your marketing site and ask your agent to match the login page. If a human had to do it before, an agent can do it now.
Two methods for creating standards: bootstrap and boil the ocean.

Meta Faces Tennessee Trial Over Instagram Design
Diana Novak Jones, Reuters: Meta Platforms faces trial in Tennessee on Monday over the state’s claims that Instagram’s design is to blame for a youth mental-health crisis, one of several trials in the coming weeks testing allegations that the company’s social media platforms were intentionally built to be addictive. I imagine Meta will spend considerable […]⌥ Permalink
Saint-Jeannet is a cozy village in France where parts of Alfred Hitchcock’s To Catch a Thief were shot. It’s also where my family spent a week this summer, wandering the narrow streets, enjoying the views, climbing the surrounding mountains, chatting, and relaxing in the shade by the pool.
‘Who’s Afraid of Chinese Models?’
Howard Rheingold is just the kind of person rss.chat was designed it for. And here he is asking what it is. Very fortuitous. And if you're wondering how a person should think of it in July 2026, it's for you too. ;-)
What is RSS.chat for Howard Rheingold
Today on rss.chat we are knocking off quick hit bug fixes. We've been focusing on big hit examples for the last few sessions.
I wrote a lengthy, passionate evisceration of everything about that disgraceful exhibition — by which I mean both the anti-football and the anti-entertainment surrounding it — and then deleted it. There are things one has to write that one does not have to post. ⚽️
Paper
My thanks to Paper for sponsoring last week at DF. Paper is a new professional design tool where every layer is real HTML and CSS. Your design is already code, which means fewer handoffs, translations, and layers of abstraction between what you design and what you actually ship.
Paper works both ways: code to design, and design to code. Connect any AI agent through MCP and the agent can read and edit your designs. Or use Paper Snapshot to capture your live site as editable layers and make new iterations. Agents handle the tedious work so you can focus on your craft and the decisions that matter.
Try Paper at paper.design (great domain name), and check out the documentation and FAQ for more info.
