The Fading Promise of Higher Education is the theme of this excellent new issue of the Hedgehog Review. I don’t have anything in the issue on that important theme, but I did write a reflection on hearing Glenn Gould — on the 70th anniversary of his breakthrough recording of the Goldberg Variations.

Wednesday waves. 🌊 👋 Video + photo.

I went out later than usual, an overcast day with most of the color washed out, but the sun glinting on silvery gray waves looked interesting.

I think, given his recent discovery of the possibilities of Casual Fashion, Poch’s personal theme song should be “Sharp Dressed Man.”

I have been assuming all along that he will leave the USMNT at the end of this tournament, and I still think that’s the way to bet, but the fanbase has fallen in love with him and he’s obviously reciprocating. I laughed out loud watching him sing “Take Me Home, Country Roads” after the match. It wouldn’t shock me now if he stayed on — and that would be great, because he has these guys playing assertive, confident, tactically imaginative football. I’m having the most fun I’ve ever had watching the USMNT.

BBC & ESPN. Pretty sure that if Bosnia haven’t scored by the 85th minute this ref will give them a penalty.

Is There a New Quantum Processor or Is Microsoft Lying?

Mathew Ingram: So what, I can hear you thinking. I don’t know or care what anyons are, or how gallium arsenide works. Me neither! The interesting part of this story for me is that Microsoft — a company that has a market value of $2.7 trillion and almost single-handedly created the personal computing industry — […]⌥ Permalink

Scripting News Valid

A thought for people who think the US can't be fixed. I've seen very strange things happen, like all of a sudden people figure it out and boom next thing you know they're the NBA Champions. It wasn't exactly sudden, but the last leg of was. A gestalt. Now two leaders figure out how to lead. The thing about each of those people is determination, and a belief they were right, and they went right up to the edge and fought. I think the country would unite behind such a leader.
