JA Westenberg on how we should just be normal about things:

And of course you can’t just disagree with someone’s politics. You have to decide they’re either a fascist or a communist or a groomer or a traitor or a neoliberal shill or a terrorist sympathiser or a brainwashed NPC.

…

Don’t confuse certainty with wisdom. Don’t confuse being a dick with courage. Have beliefs. Have standards. Have ambition. Have taste. Have boundaries. Have causes. Have things you refuse to tolerate.

But don’t give every part of yourself to every fight. Most things need attention, not obsession.

Now that Google has added AI in their search, and it dominates search more and more, it's become more difficult to find ideas that aren't well explained by AI and are on some randome old web pages. For example, this morning I wanted to find an explainer for "Standing on the toes of giants," something a colleague once used in a story. I'm sure there's stuff out there, but no luck finding it. Didn't help that there's a popular song with that title.

NBA fans, esp Knicks fans, are not fans of the current president. A picture of the Knicks team with Trump in the Oval Office would be hard to see. Not threatening to resign as a Knicks fan, not ruling it out either.

World Wide Knicks by Sally Atkins

My longtime friend Sally Atkins reponded to my question yesterday about how widely the love of the Knicks is being felt. You asked. From all I see out here in the Midwest and also from comments from friends in Europe, I can testify that yes absolutely the Knicks win is a t...

Vehicle Motion Cues — a.k.a. Apple’s Weird Anti-Nausea Dots

theverge.com/tech/942854/apple-vehicle-motion-cues-review-really-work

Thomas Ricker, writing for The Verge:

I’ll just work from the car, I thought. But after a few minutes of staring at my screen on quick mountain switchbacks I could feel the first signs of cold, coagulated nausea bubbling up from that sweaty place in my gut. I looked to the horizon for relief, but nothing helped... until I remembered Apple’s magic dots.

Introduced in 2024, Apple’s Vehicle Motion Cues promise to tap into your device’s accelerometer and gyroscope to reduce or, in my case, even eliminate the motion sickness felt when trying to use an iPhone, iPad, or MacBook inside a moving vehicle.

My son has suffered from motion sickness in cars his whole life, and Apple’s Vehicle Motion Cues work like a charm for him too. What a great feature.

Being a NYer and Knicks fan, I don't have a good perspective on how big an event the Knicks winning is. If you're not from the area, how widely is this holiday being observed and how many share the enthusiasm. Are people everywhere asking "How about those Knicks!"

There will be new higher level development environments. How they work, I don't know. But much of your time working in Claude Code is telling it how to do stuff you want it to do, always -- and reminding that it that it forgot one of the rules (which it seems to always admit). A new development environment will come with rules about how to work with people. Those rules will be written with the help of psychologists who study human reasoning processes.

Four Gun Salute Going To The Office

The Open State Foundation has its office on the old naval yard in the heart of Amsterdam. Right next to the national maritime museum, in the 17th century warehouse of the Dutch admirality, and across from the 1960’s former Base Commander’s home our (as I’m a board member there) offices are surrounded by other small […]

Yours Truly on MacBreak Weekly: Is the New Siri AI Good?

twit.tv/shows/macbreak-weekly/episodes/1029?autostart=false

MacBreak Weekly:

John Gruber of Daring Fireball joins the MacBreak Weekly panel this week! A deep dive into Apple’s new Siri following WWDC. Why Apple Intelligence & the new Siri are not coming to the EU initially later this year. And could the iPhone Ultra’s launch be delayed this year?

It’s fun to be the guest, not the host, of a podcast. I took Jason Snell’s usual panelist spot this week, alongside Leo Laporte, Andy Ihnatko, and Christina Warren. Lots to cover, including a week of real-life experience using the new Siri AI. (It’s really good!)

Also, sometimes you just know what the episode title of a podcast is going to be, the moment a phrase is uttered. This was one of those episodes, with “Intimate Functionalities”.

(I also posted this to BlueSky because I want to see how long it will be before someone responds, “Actually, there are already several biographies of Bob Dylan.”)

Fine art photography from my bedroom

A full moon and an intense storm were the perfect opportunity to create some images from my own bedroom.
