Family trip to the to the swimming pool this morning, to practice. For Lumi it's just a question of courage at this point. She actually knows how to swim, but still wants me to hold her – although I am pretending most of the time. 🀫 She reminds me so much of myself at this age: All my friends could swim before me. I hated to get my head under water and I think I was twelve, when I first started diving. Now I love being in the water, even got a diving license. I figure it will take one or two more visits until she's ready to admit to herself that she can swim. πŸ™‚ (I love watching this process btw, very similar to when she learned to ride a bike. I am just there to assist, while she basically figures it out herself.)

Quick trip to the city center today to get some swimming gear. Lumi will have swimming as part of phys ed at school starting in a couple of weeks. She's not really thrilled about it…

Turns out going back to university requires lots of documents and trips to various places to get all of those documents. Today one of those runs tooks us across the rural parts of Essen, where I saw this wind turbine in the mist. I should have stopped on the way there, because when we drove back, most of the fog had already disappeared. Still like the minimalistic look of it all.

Met up with Daniel for an afternoon of taking photographs at the Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord. It's one of those places where you can come back infinite times and still shoot something you haven't before. Suffice to say that I have a lot of images and will share some more over the next few days. Opted for color for this first post, because… well just look at the quality of the later afternoon light! 😍

Black and white urban photograph showing modernist apartment buildings with winter trees lining the street. A stop sign and street lamps are visible, with bare tree branches framing the geometric architecture against an overcast sky.

A41, behind some trees. If everything works out as planed, I'll be heading to Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord tomorrow to photograph. 🀞 It's been quite a while since my last visit.

Observing color. The lamp is now wrapped for some reason.

Totally forgot to mention it, probably because I didn't take a single photograph yesterday πŸ™ˆ: I sent out the final batch of Project 366 zines! (At least one has already gotten to its desitination.)

Who says you can't enjoy a walk in the rain? We were outside for quite a while and even made it to the shop to got some envelopes for shipping the zines.

I did some local testing and decided to install the Kirby 5 beta, because dark mode! πŸ”₯ Since I mostly work on these posts when it is already dark outside, it makes for a more enjoyable experience. Everything seems to be working as expected, even the Kirby Photo Stats plugin.

A pile of Project 366 zines (part IV) on my desk

What a nice surprise! Expected them to arrive next week, but here they are! I think, I need to buy a couple more envelopes to send them out, but hopefully I'll get it done before the week is over! So nice to hold the full set in my hands, a year's worth of work.

Took a small detour after dropping of the bike for its yearly checkup – which I could probably do this myself, but I don't really enjoy tinkering with the bike, so… Anyways, I never went on top of this parking lot before. Interesting view, shapes and contrasts.

We went ice skating today. Way too crowded on a Sunday for my taste, but both kids made some progress dispite the packed rink. And they had fun, which is the most important thing. πŸ™‚ I think its time the little one gets her own pair of inline skates, so we can practice anywhere! (Also these rental skates are horrendously uncomfortable. On the street I can wear my own skates!)

Empty collective.ruhr office

Two post in one day?! Well, I just felt like sharing the issues that I ran into with my 27mm pancake lens. You see, it has been acting up recently. When I turn on the camera, with that particular lens attached, I get a "Turn camera off and on again" warning. It happened sporadically over the last couple of weeks, but unfortunately it is now rendered completely unusable. It seems the motor is stuck…? At least that's what it sounds like, when I turn on the camera. I decided to send it to Fujifilm repair services to get it looked at. Hence a visit to the very empty office on a Saturday to print the required form to send along with the lens. Bummer, just when I finally got somewhat accustomed to the 40mm equivalent…

Another foggy morning (well, whole day actually).

I've been pretty wrapped up in work this week, making great progress with our picu plugin. Looking forward to hanging out with the family over the weekend. I hope the weather clears up for a bit so we cab spend some time outside. 🀞

A moody black and white urban scene at Gruga Park, featuring illuminated steps with built-in linear lighting. A glass-fronted building reflects bare winter trees, while a lone jogger runs through the fog in the background.

Love me a foggy morning.

Just ordered the final batch of the Project 366 zines (Part IV)! Can wait to send them along to the lovely people who ordered a copy. For the next project I added a log to the project page and I'll try to updated it regularly. 🀞

It's been a year and a half since we came here for Lumi's last riding lesson. Today it was Suvi's turn to figure out if this is something she wants to do once a week. The final verdict is still out, but the fact that it is a 20 minute car ride to get here, is probably the reason she will decide against it. She really hates being in a car. πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

Everytime I walk over this bridge I take an image. I repeat myself most of the time, but sometimes I find a fresh angle, or the light hits differently.

The project 366 zine part IV is done! I uploaded it to Blurb a few days ago. I'll send out a newsletter about it tomorrow. If you are interested in getting a copy make sure to subscribe!

Abstract, long-exposure photograph taken early in the morning, capturing streaks of light in various colors. The predominant colors are yellow, blue, and white light trails that create curved and zigzagging patterns against a dark background. The effect creates a dynamic, almost chaotic composition that suggests movement through an urban environment.

This was a mistake. But I kinda like the outcome. First exposure of the day.

Watching the fireworks from the balcony on New Year's Eve. Just imported some images from this week. I like this one very much and remembered that, since finishing the 366 project, I no longer have to adhere to any rules when it comes to posting images. 😊

Shooting video for a change.

Welcome back! Happy 2025! Still not feeling super well, but we needed to get some family business done today (hence the shooting of video). Regarding the 366 project I posted a short recap on the other blog. Also: Bluesky favorites will now be displayed below next to the Mastodon likes.

Monochrome image of my daughter peaking inside the raclette machine

Is it ready yet? We had raclette for the last dinner of 2024. Unfortunately we couldn't get together with the neighbors as we had originally planned, because they are sick as well. Bets are still open whether Suvi will be awake at midnight. I said before, that I consider it a super power to sleep through the fireworks.

And just like that, this concludes the 366 project I started on January 1st. 😱 I'll post a little bit about my takeaways soon, but right now, I just want to say thank you to everyone that followed along – and especially to the fine people, that bought a zine this year. ❀️ It felt amazing sending those out all over the world! The final edition (part IV) will be out in January. No post tomorrow. πŸ₯Ί

Have a great 2025. Happy New Year! ✨

Still not feeling great. Made it out of the house for a little bit, though. Took a picture of my family inspecting some random stuff people put out on the street. My wife usually finds something β€žusefulβ€œ – much to my dismay. πŸ˜‚ As if we didn't have enough β€žstuffβ€œ already. But I digress. Tomorrow will be the final post of the 366 project. The year long journey will find its end. I have no clue what I will photograph. There is no preconceived concept to any of this, so I guess it will be random, just like all the other days before. πŸ™‚
