Week 4 of no heat in half the house. Maybe today. Then the coffee maker died, and dammit this is just a bit much. FFS.

Today’s gratitude post is dedicated to @adactio.com and his wonderful resource Going Offline (goingoffline.adactio.com) - Just finished adding a first pass at a service worker for rwt.io thx Jeremy! https://rwt.io
Thx to @bell.bz & @cydstumpel.nl ‘s posts I’ve got some fun lil’ view transitions on my site rwt.io https://rwt.io
A little rough but migrated kitreviews.cc over to @11ty.dev paving the way for shutting down my virtual server. First time since maybe 1997 or 98 that I haven’t had a server to run CMS sites on. No more custom CMS, no more Drupal, not even this last Wordpress experiment. Weird. https://kitreviews.cc
Been keeping this tab open for months, maybe longer? Finally put @5t3ph.bsky.social ‘s awesome lil pen about using css filters to make images work better in dark mode. Put it in practice on my site rwt.io this morning in minutes. So. Good. https://codepen.io/5t3ph/pen/VwModqR
There are a lot of way more important things to deal with in the world right now, but after a very long journey we shipped an update that completes the shift over to our brand font across all of Chewy.com (and we were able to do it via one theme file, loaded from a central cdn). Feels pretty great https://Chewy.com
Still plenty of work to do but pretty excited to relaunch my website for the first time since 2018. Lots of new typography and techniques already, and really chuffed about how it’s coming along. Welcome to the new rwt.io
Will give this a proper write up soon but finally figured out the JS to create a web component to mimic ‘shape-outside’ for text line boxes. Then I have to resubmit it to the CSSWG issue queue. Example and link to repo here: https://jpamental.github.io/shape-outside-line-box/example.html #typography #design
Every once in a while I get a nudge from a friend I haven’t spoken with in a while. This week it was the wonderful Mr @zeldman.bsky.social - hello Jeffrey! Nice reminder that sometimes social networks can actually be, err, social :)
What a lovely thing to be included in this! Thx @johnpicozzi.bsky.social https://lostcarpark.com/advent/2025/17/curious-findings
Why are mobile browsers so intent on capturing ‘hover’?! It’s just dumb, and breaks things for everyone, making you have to tap twice. Seems bad for everyone. (I know you can put it in a pointer media query, but conceptually it’s just dumb)
When you realize a coworker is following you on Strava and sees you subtweeting work frustration in your ride titles…
Always a good day when even a bit of it gets spent with @csswizardry.com - so good to catch up tonight, and looking forward to the next couple of days together at #WebUnleashed
I miss the immediate satisfaction of everybody freaking out about #wordle being down and tweeting about it
Gave a new talk today at #SmashingConf about ‘typographic curiosities’—in performance, responsiveness, and expression. Loved the response so far so wanted to share the slides and resources: https://noti.st/jpamental/3AhnW9/typographic-curiosities
Haven’t posted here in a bit. But back at a web conference and feels like a good time to get back to it. If you’re at #SmashingConf in NYC say hello!
Spent time with Ellen before she had to go to NYC, went for a 162km ride, and rebuilt a carburetor. Solid ‘dad stuff’ work today.
Going to be talking about curiosity and it's role in design later today at evolvedrupal.com - made a few adjustments since @beyondtellerrand.com and excited to see how folks react https://www.evolvedrupal.com
It’s up! Video of my talk about curiosity and its role in design that I shared for the first time at #btconf [contains quote post or other embedded content]
Guy sitting across from me on the commuter train home has an open beer in paper bag and is watching a show on his phone with the volume up, no headphones. Just doin’ his thing on a rush hour train.
“Curiosity thrives in the space between expected and unexpected, between map and territory” - @joanwestenberg.com - love this (and will def be incorporating this in my talk on curiosity and its role in design the next time I give it!) see also: need to talk to @ethanmarcotte.com about curiosity too
You know what coffee shop? I don’t want to be nagged about whether or not I liked my experience of buying a coffee via email literally every time I buy a coffee. Or maybe just ‘never’. Your barista will know because I tip them for their lovely attention to their craft.
Some beautiful photos by @florianziegler.com from @beyondtellerrand.com last week. Thanks Florian! This was a new and very different kind of talk for me, and he captured it beautifully
Not only just brilliant getting to see @r8r.at again, but also honored by your write up of the event and my new talk. You picked up on so many of the themes I wanted to get across. Cheers mate! [contains quote post or other embedded content]
What an epic week! @beyondtellerrand.com was incredible (as expected), but add to that so many new friends and capped off with an all-day adventure to Acern and beyond with these two excellent gents. Ended the day with 163km/500m/6:55 and almost half of it unpaved! #cycling [contains quote post or other embedded content]
Apropos of nothing, 7am techno beats in the airport taxi is apparently a thing
Cheers Mario! Wonderful write up and SO good to see you this week! [contains quote post or other embedded content]
For those interested, link to slides from my talk ‘Curious Findings’, plus resources, and a form to share your own story about curiosity and how it impacts your work here: curiosity.design #btconf @beyondtellerrand.com https://curiosity.design
Such an amazing collection of images - honored to be a part @florianziegler.com ! [contains quote post or other embedded content]
General comment on Aer Lingus app: having departure and arrival times and not indicating time zone changes doesn’t help me understand my flight duration. Or maybe you could just put the flight duration there too. Just an idea. FFS.
