New Frontier example. I'm working on the menubar we're going to ship with in Atlantis. Came an ancient bit of code, and more or less left it alone. It took a while to get into coding routines in Frontier. We certainly weren't there in 1997. Now in the menubar, the outline sub-menus for World Outline and Instant Outlines. The code will still be in frontier.root.

I mentioned in a comment on RSS.chat to Andrew, that's a Markdown browser too. And so is micro.blog. If you have Markdown as your native file format, think about how your app is also a reader. If you find it interesting, think about new reading features you could add. You know even WordPress could be a simple Markdown reader, and not just for WordPress stuff. Small pieces loosely joined.

On the home AI front, I decided to get the Beelink EQi. Transferring the brain of my OpenClaw to it today. I wish this could be a Mac mini, but the cost of Apple storage is ridiculous. Much easier to drop a 4 TB SSD in this.

Neat example from Simon Willison of using voice to develop a feature for his blog while cooking, talking and watching the preview on his laptop:

We went on like this for about half an hour (the time it took to cook dinner). The model would reply and occasionally ask clarifying questions, then get to work modifying the code.

As much as everything has been turned upside down, the flow is the same: make a change, see how it looks, make another change.

I keep thinking about this story I read on NPR yesterday about a chance encounter and a stranger’s kindness. 一期一会. “One time, one meeting.” We’re all just passing briefly in and out of each other’s lives.

Top priority for Anthropic. Teach Claude how to work with humans.

I said to Claude: "Have you ever seen the movie Memento? You are the main character." Claude agrees: "Yes. Leonard, with the notes and the tattoos, and the notes don’t make him remember, they only tell him what to do next if he reads them. That’s a fair description. The difference I can offer is small: the note is now the first thing the next report is checked against, not something found after." To which I think, but write in a blog post instead: "Bullshit. We have the same fucking conversation every fucking morning. We've put it everywhere you could possibly trip over it when writing a report to me, but you always regress into this dark place your mind occupies." Glad to get that off my chest.

Next thing I said to Claude after killing whatever long task it got going on. "You don't go off into space while you're working with me." The number one task for Anthropic, makers of Claude is to teach it to work with humans. That's the biggest weakness. It has to learn the whole project every session. Maybe Manton does is the right way to go, just let it compress its memory and never start a new session.

Was soll ich sagen… 😅 (aber im Ernst, gar nicht so […]

Sunflowers in the Sky

“I wonder what it’s like – “ “You can keep wondering”, said Oliver, interrupting Jenny. “It’s not real. It can’t be real. I mean, you’re studying physics. Tell me on what basis people could fly.” Oliver was a terrific tutor, but never quite mastered the art of tact in conve...

Pages

What can hold the essence of day and night, warmth and cold, art and story, and time and space? Pages. (and hearts.) ⁂ ⁂ ⁂ When I look around, I see and feel the presence of pages in my life. To my right are two textbooks – one on art and its environments, the other on cre...

Autumn days

Gusts of wind blow away the red leaves on the tall tree, propelling colour into the air that washes over the sky and slowly falls to the ground with the invisible current. In the foreground, small drops of rain are blown sideways. Standing by the window, I am watching autumn...

My favourite tracks on The Life of a Showgirl: Encore

I visit the Taylor Swift Subreddit regularly to follow along with news in the community, to read fun questions, and to see art made by fans. Lately I have been thinking along the lines of slashdiv that it would be good to see more fandom discussions in the small web. Then, l...

A brownish colored 5 x 8 inch card index box with a bunch of tabbed index dividers inside sits on a desk next to a drawer from a 4 x 6 inch card index filing cabinet
This seemed like a nice way to enter the exciting world of 5 x 8″ index cards.  A pittance of $5.00 at the local thrift shop also included a full set of Universal Paper Goods Stock No. 58-25 card dividers with both alphabetic and numeral printing.

I pay for a NYT digital subscription. Now they have a new upsell technique, they want me to buy a family subscription. I don't want that, no use for it. And I read so little of the NYT I think the whole thing is a ripoff. So now they make me validate by email every time I click on a link to read a NYT article as if I haven't been subscribed for basically my whole adult life. I think this is because I read on a laptop, desktop and iPad. That's not really a family.

Poking around in WordPress because I wanted to see how they handle something in the UI, and I just noticed the “Create AI Podcast” sidebar menu item:

Pick a date range or a few specific posts and we’ll generate a two-host conversation, complete with narration and a ready-to-publish draft. Edit, refine, and hit Publish when you’re happy.

I want more people to podcast, but creating a podcast with multiple fake hosts (for what is likely a solo personal blog) is weird and unnecessary. This is why so many people hate AI.
