Figma (Sites) creating inaccessible, non-semantic div soup? I’m not surprised at all. That’s basically the main point of the talk I just gave at #btconf. Figma is for painting beautiful pictures of websites. Not for making websites. We make websites with semantic HTML, declarative CSS, JavaScript for the things only JavaScript can do, and a bit of ARIA. That’s how this medium works. That’s the material.
I had an absolute blast designing the titles and festival identity for @beyondtellerrand.com! I digged deep into my love and early inspirations of web 1.0 / 00's design aesthetics. I channeled David Carson, DesignisKinky, k10k, Designers Republic and more to make a fun, visuallyOTT set of designs!

Weekly Roundup #012

Guten tag! I'm a few weeks late in writing a round-up, but I've had my nose to the grindstone the last few weeks getting the Beyond Tellerrand 2025 title sequence ready, and I'm very happy to say that the titles went well over in
Not only just brilliant getting to see @r8r.at again, but also honored by your write up of the event and my new talk. You picked up on so many of the themes I wanted to get across. Cheers mate! [contains quote post or other embedded content]
What an epic week! @beyondtellerrand.com was incredible (as expected), but add to that so many new friends and capped off with an all-day adventure to Acern and beyond with these two excellent gents. Ended the day with 163km/500m/6:55 and almost half of it unpaved! #cycling [contains quote post or other embedded content]
Apropos of nothing, 7am techno beats in the airport taxi is apparently a thing
Today is the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day.
Remembering my Grandparents who served during World War II in the Merchant Navy, Home Guard, Women's Land Army, and as a hospital Nurse.
Also remembering those forgotten by the history books: the 2.5 million South Asians (including Hindus, Sikhs, and Muslims), the 1 million Africans (notably Kenyans), and the 10s of thousands of Caribbeans (notably Jamaicans).
When they fought Fascism they fought it together.
Thank you. #VEDay
Cheers Mario! Wonderful write up and SO good to see you this week! [contains quote post or other embedded content]
Recently, myself and a bunch of wonderful creatives from the world of film, TV and games spoke at @bafta.org about the skills needed for those industries, with those insights aimed at helping young people navigate their early careers. ❤️ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=39SpgQx6r1w&ab_channel=YoungBAFTA
“I couldn't help but feel struck by the power of the good people that are somehow still designing and building this future together. This is an industry packed with sensitive, thoughtful, sharp, talented people who still give a shit about how to make things right.”

Also, what a quote:
“We’re each of us alone, to be sure. What can you do but hold your hand out in the dark?”

Bye Düsseldorf, hi Bristol! Silly-o-clock flight home but I’m already in Bristolian soil and it’s not even 9am! I had an absolute blast speaking at / doing titles at Beyond Tellerrand! Big loves to host Marc and the whole @beyondtellerrand.com crew! 👏

In this episode of the Open Studio Podcast, Martina Flor sits down with James Hughes, the illustrator, educator, and founder of The Illustrator’s Guide, to talk about the real, behind-the-scenes journey of building a sustainable creative career.
James shares how he turned his freelance illustration practice into an educational platform that helps artists learn the skills traditional schools often skip—like pricing, outreach, and real-world business strategy. You’ll hear why newsletters have become one of his most valuable tools, how teaching helped him reconnect with his own creative goals, and the importance of creating your own path in a competitive industry.
