Realizing that the vertical toolbars / tab bars in the iPhone Duo will mean more buttons going icon-only, losing their labels. Better use of screen space, but maybe a step back for clarity and accessibility.

John Gruber, in a blog post about Apple Pencil confusion with the Duo:

The easiest way to think about it isn’t to compare which devices support which features (like pressure sensitivity, or double-tapping) — it’s just to think about which devices can even pair with which Pencil models.

Too bad it’s so complicated, because the Pencil really is great, even the original one.

Wired reported that OpenAI asked members of Congress if a coordinated AI slowdown would be legal:

Substantive coordination on safety between AI labs may risk running afoul of antitrust law, the people say, which poses a significant obstacle to bringing major tech giants on board with the effort.

Major Life Announcement

I know everyone has been waiting to hear what’s been going on behind the scenes, so I’m just going to lay it out: I’ve made an offer to buy Ryan Phelan and Stewart Brand’s houseboat Mirene. People say “the two happiest days of a boaters life is when you buy the boat and sell the boat” but I’m not always … Continue reading Major Life Announcement →

Incredible that it has been 25 years since 9/11. Thinking of everyone in NY especially. We were far away, but I’ll never forget how it felt that morning, not sure what would happen next, worried about our daughters who were babies, like the stability we had grown accustomed to had just shattered.

Gwen; AI; Fins

I updated gwenthegoblin.com with a backup of everything (from the beginning to May) using Memento Mori. Here’s the GitHub issue I participated in. I will be doing this again. I added to a page I started many months ago, with links to how AI is talked about and characterized. It’s my ‘AI’ is… page For...

Remembering 9/11/2001

Scripting News on 9/11/2001. Mayor Mamdami's remembrance of 9/11. New header image for this event. I didn't have a TV, I had turned my cable subscription off after I became so obsessed with coverage of the 2000 election. So what I reported came exclusively through the web. NYT on 9/12/2001: "The world's changed." Link to Scripting News for 9/11/2001. Screen shot of webcam on the Empire State Bulding.

Great to have Jimmy Kimmel back on the air after summer break. His interview on YouTube with James Talarico is excellent. Starting to think Talarico is actually going to win. He has the perfect message for this moment. 🇺🇸

Watched: The Librarians. Really good, covering the book bans in Texas and elsewhere. Lots of stories about what it felt like at school board meetings and in libraries. 📺

Two more newsrooms are suing OpenAI. It's complicated.

Publishers are suing AI vendors, accusing them of theft. But are they giving the creators responsible for building their value a fair deal?

On Theranos

Elizabeth Holmes is in the news. In 2019 Alex Gibney released a documentary on what that company did and how it operated. It was called The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley. I watched it on HBO. I can remember the feeling of watching it. It made me angry. What follows is an adaptation...
