Into the Great Wide Open

Seit letzter Woche braucht man keinen Invite-Code mehr um sich bei Bluesky anzumelden, die wesentlich spannendere Info steht aber, wie beiläufig erwähnt, im letzten Abschnitt: This month, we’ll be rolling out an experimental early version of “federation,” or the feature that makes the network so open and customizable. On Bluesky, you’ll have the freedom to […]

Super Bowl!

Going to the Super Bowl with my friends Jaime Waydo and Jason Hoffman was a peak experience, everything about the day felt par none. I captured some Spatial Videos so friends with Vision Pros could watch some of it, but there’s no good way to share those on blogs yet. Friends have asked for some … Continue reading Super Bowl!

Own Your Web – Issue 9: We ❤️ RSS

Hi All! 🤗 In the last issue, we looked at blogrolls as one way to improve the visibility and discoverability of our sites. Whether or not you want to add a blogroll to your site is a matter of personal preference. But there is something else which probably everyone with a pe...

On StellarWP Podcast

I’m still doing some podcasts as sabbatical-Matt, especially with the WordPress community which for me isn’t really work, it’s building relationships in our community of practice. If you know me, I can wax poetic about WordPress for hours! It’s what I do for fun. Here’s my first post-sabbatical interview with Michelle Frechette. Another unusual thing … Continue reading On StellarWP Podcast

WordPress, Taylor Swift, Super Bowl, oh my

There has been quite a bit of buzz in the WordPress community because during the Grammys red carpet Taylor Swift’s website went down and this is what everyone saw: Hey there! That looks familiar. What a beautiful WordPress logo! (Hat tip: Alexa Scordato for telling me about this.) The website also had some ups and … Continue reading WordPress, Taylor Swift, Super Bowl, oh my

Debt vs Equity

Balaji Srinivasan posted a great essay on how founders should think about debt vs equity, unfortunately it’s on X/Twitter so the format isn’t great, but the content is gold. As we exit the ZIRP world and go back into normal interest rates, I think this is really important concept for entrepreneurs to understand.

Thoughts on Tech Employment

The Washington Post writes The U.S. economy is booming. So why are tech companies laying off workers? This article has some good data, but I think misses the point with sub-heads like “Shine has come off the tech industry.” Really? How is that reflected in their stock prices? I think a few things are happening. … Continue reading Thoughts on Tech Employment

Offloading JavaScript With Custom Properties

Sometimes a web development client doesn’t know quite what they want. Trying to guess is difficult and delivering a guess is risky. Where they have a vague idea, I offer to set them up with the means to create what they want for themselves—when they work out precisely what t...

Own Your Web – Issue 8: On a Roll

Hi All! 🤗 “Where have all the websites gone?” “Websites, as we know them, are dead.” “Blogging is dead.” I don’t know about you, but whenever I hear or read statements like that in controversial headlines or viral posts, I can’t help but think: “No! All of that is still here...

TypePad feeds are back

It's time for some chat about RSS/Atom feeds, and let's start with some good news. A few months ago, when we were fetching the feeds of any TypePad blogs, they were returning a "403 Forbidden" error because they were protected by Cloudflare's anti-bot captcha mechanism. Cloudflare have a list of approved bots but to get on their list you must satisfy various conditions, including sending at least 1000 requests per day. ooh.directory isn't that big or aggressive, so it wasn't a surprise that we never heard anything back from our application.

Own Your Web – Issue 7: What Is It For?

Hi All! 🤗 One question I’ve heard repeatedly from people getting started with their personal website is “what pages and sections – like blog, photos, about me – does my site need to have?” I asked myself the exact same question when I first started with my site. I looked at ...

Hier bloggt der Chef noch selbst

Vor ein paar Tagen schrieb Tantek Çelik (@tantek.com) auf seinem Blog: No large language models (LLM) were used in the production of this post. Inspired by a subtle but clear sign-of-the-times one-line disclaimer at the end of RFC9518’s Acknowledgments (https://www.rfc-editor.org/rfc/rfc9518.html#appendix-A-4) Ich weiß nicht ob „inspiriert“ hier der richtige Begriff ist… ich weiß was er meint […]

All Things Being Equalized

For my birthday, I got a new pair of speakers for my home office / home studio. After looking around for quite some time, I settled on the ADAM Audio T5V in the end. The T5Vs are affordable, entry-level studio monitors with a 5“ woofer that are optimized for smaller rooms. A...

A page for every blog

A couple of months ago regular visitors might have noticed a little change to the site – every blog now has its own page. Now that this is working smoothly, and seasonal holidays are out of the way, here's the blog post about that change.
