Stunning Artemis II Phone Wallpapers

NASA has made available more than a dozen mobile wallpapers of photos taken during the Artemis II mission for free download. Basic Apple Guy has made some wallpapers of his own (that are slightly larger than NASA’s and better for iPhones). I have also made a few of my own: E...

Quoting Giles Turnbull

I have a feeling that everyone likes using AI tools to try doing someone else’s profession. They’re much less keen when someone else uses it for their profession.

SQLite WAL Mode Across Docker Containers Sharing a Volume

Research: SQLite WAL Mode Across Docker Containers Sharing a Volume

Inspired by this conversation on Hacker News about whether two SQLite processes in separate Docker containers that share the same volume might run into problems due to WAL shared memory. The answer is that everything works fine - Docker containers on the same host and filesystem share the same shared memory in a way that allows WAL to collaborate as it should.

Updates: navigation placement changed again and a starry night sky.

I’ve been mainly working on behind the scenes improvements and streamlining the onboarding for new citizens in the last weeks.

But I’m back to making more day-to-day visible stuff. First up: the navigation on larger screens is back on the side again. I believe it’s a better placement, and I think it works with the current, slightly updated design.

There also have been some adjustments to the background: the clouds now stay fixed, even on iOS and iPadOS. And browser is now getting a starry night sky - where previously, this was only available in Safari (as this is the only browser supporting the new random() CSS function at the moment).

More updates soon.

Alynda Segarra is a singer songwriter from the Bronx. They formed Hurray for the Riff Raff in 2007, and since then, they’ve released 8 albums. Their most recent is The Past Is Still Alive, which came out in 2024. It was named one of the best albums of the year in the New York Times, the Associated Press, Entertainment Weekly, and The Atlantic, and Pitchfork called it one of the best albums of the decade so far. For this episode, I spoke to Alynda about the first track on the album, “Alibi.”

Continuous glucose monitoring made me continuously crazy

Daily life is different when you're tracking glucose. A little over a year ago, I was on my way to a conference. My bags were packed, the Uber was on its way, but there was one last thing to do before I could head to the airport. Tearing open a small isopropyl alcohol wipe, I […]

Solar Eclipse From the Far Side of the Moon

kottke.org/26/04/solar-eclipse-far-side-of-the-moon

Kottke:

This shot from Artemis II of the Moon eclipsing the Sun is one of the most breathtaking astronomical photos I’ve ever seen. Holy shit.

Follow NASA on Flickr for more.

Update: In a follow-up post, Kottke has assembled a slew of great iPhone wallpapers from Artemis II photos, along with links to other collections, like Basic Apple Guy’s. Also, The Iconfactory has added a bunch of these images to their wonderful Wallaroo app (which is how I’ve switched to one on my own iPhone).

Update 2: Nils Streedain has made wallpapers for the Mac optimized for OLED displays (HEIC native format, pure #000 black background, etc.). Gorgeous.

Sam Altman, in a Video Released by OpenAI, Apparently Thinks AGI Is Going to Hit Society Like a Once-a-Century Pandemic

x.com/OpenAINewsroom/status/2041618671236469200?s=20

Not sure why they think this comparison is reassuring rather than terrifying.

I also have to say that Altman’s claims, today, that OpenAI employees were obsessed with COVID weeks ahead of the rest of the world feels more than a little like Donald Trump’s repeated false claim that he predicted, pre-9/11, that Osama bin Laden would attack the U.S.
