Emoji Design Convergence Review: 2018–2026

blog.emojipedia.org/emoji-design-convergence-review-2018-2026/

Keith Broni, writing at Emojipedia, has a good illustrated survey of how most emoji sets have converged in meaning — almost entirely toward Apple’s designs: There are several structural reasons why Apple’s designs so often become the gravitational center of emoji converg...

At the Stone Skimming World Championships in Scotland (at an old slate quarry), it’s distance that counts, not the number of skips. “Anyone who is familiar with slate could instinctively tell you that it’s a particularly good rock for skimming.”

50:33
This episode, first aired in 2019, brings you the story of John Scott, the professional hockey player that every fan loved to hate.  A tough guy. A brawler. A goon. But when an impish pundit named Puck Daddy called on fans to vote for Scott to play alongside the world’s...

New logo icon

FeedCity now has an updated logo icon. Here is the previous and the new icon side by side (the old one left/first): It’s for sure an incremental update, but the larger RSS icon makes it a little more recognisable in small sizes. Plus, it looks a little more polished. The site and its manifest.json file now also include a maskable version without the surrounding circle. This way, operating systems can crop or mask it as they see fit when installing FeedCity as an app (PWA), making the icon look more native to the platform. (If you had FeedCity already installed as an app, you need to reinstall it to make the new icon show.) /Daniel

How to fireproof a city

Down the street from the Los Angeles Angels' stadium in Anaheim, a crowd gathers to watch two homes burn. In less than 30 minutes, one structure is reduced to its smoldering, blackened wood frame, while the other, thanks to simple changes to its design, is remarkably unscathed. Of course, this was the point of the […]

Open Responses

Open Responses This is the standardization effort I've most wanted in the world of LLMs: a vendor-neutral specification for the JSON API that clients can use to talk to hosted LLMs. Open Responses aims to provide exactly that as a documented standard, derived from OpenAI's R...

By All Measures. “Our scales are too imbalanced; we are unable to think the unthinkable. It goes without saying that it can be paralyzing, demoralizing, to be an individual acting as part of the collective, globe-sized world.”

I spent a year on Linux and forgot to miss Windows

It was an overcast January morning in 2025 the day I decided to delete my operating system. The Ubuntu installer warned me that it would remove everything on my hard drive, permanently wiping the entire Windows 10 installation I'd been running for years at that point. I hesitated for a second - maybe I should […]
