The Ecstasy of an Open Brain

36:11
As we grow up, there are little windows of time when we can learn very, very fast, and very, very deeply. Scientists call these moments, critical periods. Real, neurological, biological states when our brain can soak up information like a sponge. Then, these windows of learn...

🎬 The Killer

Movie poster for “The Killer”.

Well, this was not so much up my alley. Some, or even lots of sequences, might have been meant in a humorous way, but I really couldn't tell. On the one hand, it has these super cheesy relationship and friendship scenes. And on the other, it has endless gun fights and car chases, that were not all that inspiring. Apart from the final fight, which was ok. Not quite my type of action film.

🎬 Re-Animator

Movie poster for “Re-Animator”.

Quite the movie, and quite up my alley. It could be a little more fast-paced IMHO, but other than that, there's lots of silly fun to be had: all that gut and gore, the fights, and so much more in that grandios finale. And that loose head. If you like splatter movies, you'll definitely like this one!

I think I might take some time today to read Pema Chodron’s When Things Fall Apart. “How can we live our lives when everything seems to fall apart - when we are continually overcome by fear, anxiety, and pain?”

Ran across a song with “741 Hz” in the title and there’s a whole Spotify playlist of similar songs (“a soothing solfeggio frequency that is used by many to let go of negativity and toxic energy”) and ngl they are relaxing.

Here We Go Again

hills covered with barren trees

Hey everyone. I don’t have a whole lot to say about the election results and probably won’t talk about it too much here over the coming days. I don’t know what kottke.org’s “role” will be in this altered world we awoke to on Wednesday, but for my own sanity, I need to get back to work here or I will scroll myself into dust. I have no idea if what I’ll be posting is what you’re looking for, but it’s what I’ve got.

The Brutal Clarity of This Result

politicalwire.com/2024/11/06/the-election-provided-some-clarity/

Taegan Goddard, Political Wire: After last night, it became clear it was a mistake to dismiss Trump’s true political strength. He will win the 2024 election with at least 51% of the popular vote. His win will not be the result of a constitutional quirk. It was not even ...

‘Trump Has Won, but Democracy Is Not Over’

theatlantic.com/newsletters/archive/2024/11/trump-victory-democracy/680549/

Tom Nichols, for The Atlantic: Paradoxically, however, Trump’s reckless venality is a reason for hope. Trump has the soul of a fascist but the mind of a disordered child. He will likely be surrounded by terrible but incompetent people. All of them can be beaten: in court...
