Science and Our Personal Bodily Freedoms

This piece by Lydia Polgreen on The Strange Report Fueling the War on Trans Kids is so good — straightforward and informative, especially when compared to the incoherent nonsense that the NY Times has run about trans people over the past few years. The piece is about, in Pol...

Race Is a Fiction, Racism Is Real

No surprise that Jamelle Bouie’s short videos are as interesting and informative as his NY Times columns. In a recent TikTok video (mirrored on Instagram), Bouie recommended a book called Racecraft: The Soul of Inequality in American Life by sociologist Karen Fields and hi...

Nick Heer on Patreon Creators Paying the Full 30 Percent App Store Rate for New Subscriptions

pxlnv.com/linklog/patreon-in-app-purchases/

Nick Heer, writing at Pixel Envy: The 30% fee is also notable. As far as I can tell, only a handful of Patreon users would exceed the million-dollar annual threshold for Apple’s Small Business Program. That is, everyone who earns less than a million dollars per year thro...

Patreon Had Spent a Decade in an App Store Gray Zone

Sarah Perez, writing for TechCrunch: Despite Apple’s rules and policies, Patreon had existed in an odd sort of gray area, as some of its subscription-based offerings could be consumed in its app while others could not. Another possible reason for the Patreon exception wa...

Always. Be. Knolling.

You’ve probably seen instances of knolling without knowing there was a word for it. Knolling at the Apple Store: Knolling the contents of your bag: Knolling a recipe for a book: Knolling the parts of a machine: Knolling is the practice of organizing objects in parallel or at 90° angles. The term has been popularized by artist Tom Sachs; he picked it up from Andrew Kromelow when both were working at Frank Gehry’s furniture fabrication shop. Gehry was designing chairs for furniture company Knoll, and Kromelow would arrange unused tools in a manner similar to Knoll furniture. Hence, knolling. Update: Things Organized Neatly is really something. Lots of knolling. [This is a vintage post originally from Mar 2014.] Tags: Andrew Kromelow · design · Knoll · language · timeless posts · Tom Sachs

‘Objects of Our Life’ — Steve Jobs at the 1983 International Design Conference in Aspen

stevejobsarchive.com/exhibits/objects-of-our-life?_kx=tRSlDBg1VJdPieOs0meJvZOIyzJaEDpuHFxS1pBel1M.VwvJFc

New from the Steve Jobs Archive: an hourlong video of young Steve Jobs delivering a talk on design in 1983. Jony Ive wrote a splendid introduction:

The revolution Steve described over 40 years ago did of course happen, partly because of his profound commitment to a kind of civic responsibility. He cared, way beyond any sort of functional imperative. His was a victory for beauty, for purity and, as he would say, for giving a damn. He truly believed that by making something useful, empowering and beautiful, we express our love for humanity.

Mushroom Color Atlas: A Rainbow of Dye Colors

The Mushroom Color Atlas is a resource and reference for everyone curious about mushrooms and the beautiful and subtle colors derived from dyeing with mushrooms. But it is also the start of a journey and a point of departure, introducing you to the kaleidoscopic fungi kingdom and our connection to it. I love stuff like the Mushroom Color Atlas. There’s a book version coming out soon — you can pre-order at Amazon, Bookshop.org, or Chronicle Books. (via @presentandcorrect) Tags: color · mushrooms 💬 Join the discussion on kottke.org →

The free healthcare for athletes in the Olympic Village shines a bright light on one of America’s most shameful, uh, “features”. “The Olympic Village offers free healthcare. The United States, of course, does not.” God, this is just embarrassing.
