🎬 Fantastic Mr. Fox

letterboxd.com/danielpietzsch/film/fantastic-mr-fox/

A lovingly made animated film. Not only is Mr. Fox fantastic - everyone is. And so is the story, the sets, the music. And as typical for Mr. Anderson, it sometimes difficult to appreciate all those little details during the first viewing.

Noticing

Walking through the Royal Mile, I noticed the faint – then increasing – scent of coffee in the air coming from a popular bakery. It is morning. I continued walking for a little while, en route to one of my preferred coffee shops. There, the baristas were laughing, one exchan...

Rainbow walk

Today there was a rainbow. ⁂ ⁂ ⁂ A few minutes into my walk, a shower flashed from the grey sky. Looking at all the falling water that surrounded me, I took cover under a nearby, dense tree, one through which comparatively few raindrops were falling. I can wait here for a ...

Notes from the gallery

On Tuesday I took a few notes while visiting the National Gallery of Scotland. Usually I develop these into a full post, but since the notes have been in my drafts for a few days I thought I would publish them verbatim. ⁂ ⁂ ⁂ How the light of a museum changes the painting ...

Sunrise

At this time of year, the sun begins to rise around the time I wake up. This means I can see the colours of the sunrise; how the sunlight changes the sky. While autumn and winter can be cold, the colours bring the seasons to life. Lately, I have been motivated not only to st...

The (continuing) joy of monostiches

In 2024 I started writing monostiches, which are poems that span a single line. Over the last few weeks I have been writing more, and now I have a category page devoted to monostiches. I have been thinking about why I like the monostich form so much. I think there are a few...

First pianos

I was listening to a cover of Taylor Swift’s Babylon and, almost immediately, something other than the melody stood out: the resonance of the notes. This sounds familiar. The recording reminded me of the sound my grandparents’ piano made when I would play it as a kid. I sat ...

Ensuring my posts have permalinks using bash

Last month I moved away from using the Ghost CMS to publish pages and posts on my website. I made the move because I realised I was maintaining more than I really needed to make my site work. I had to manage Ghost (and keep it updated) and an intermediary endpoint to which G...

Noooooo! I made a huge mistake. I watched a few minutes of the deranged racist‘s AI ramblings in the Ruby World keynote on YouTube – and now my feed is full of that guy … 🤪

I‘d better go watch that Cumberbatch documentary now! 🌍🌱

Autumn morning

The low clouds glowed with shades of lavender as I opened the window to see the first colours of Day. A field in the distance, yellow from harvest and the drier weather, is coated in a blanket of cool fog; in front of the trees are an almost-but-not-quite transparent haze, m...
