Fallbacks

When I published Sunset this evening, I saw the post in my web reader, Artemis, and realised that the title was not what I expected. I clicked through to the blog post and realised I had put the title in the “category” field rather than the “title” field. This meant there wa...

Sunset

Glistening over the hills in the immediate distance, the rainbow made me first pause for breath, then pause for thought. This is the first time in months I have seen a rainbow. I am looking at the spectrum of every visible colour. I followed the rainbow for as long as I could...

🎬 The Martian

Movie poster for “The Martian”.

It’s a space movie. I like space movies. But this is not the best of its genre IMHO. I can’t complain about how it’s made, really. I definitely enjoyed the acting and most of the visuals and sets. But the story is a bit so-so. I found it a little awkward making everyone explain everything all the time. And Mark Watney’s good mood with its constant funny-cool slogans went a little on my nerves (together with the partly cheese music). The final space scene is just bonkers. So: “ok”, I’d say.

🎬 Big Trouble in Little China

Movie poster for “Big Trouble in Little China”.

This is so absurd, you can not not be entertained. And if you just take Jack Burton’s view and go with it, you can just indulge yourself in this. Chinese clans fighting themselves in back alleys? Sure! Superfighters flying in form the sky? Why not! Cursed villains with superpowers? Ok!? Surprise monster? Ok, what the hell!

It’s a weird Carpenter movie. I liked the old-school-ness of it all. The humour was actually pretty great. But it’s not my favourite from him.

Awe

Two people slightly in front of me, to my left, crane their heads to the sky, following the one-hundred-and-eighty-year-old structure to our right. They slowed down as they walked. Does awe have a pace? I walk past the monument often, a reminder of the literary history of th...

Autumn

The sun danced with the clouds in a competition where both the clouds and the sun wins, for there is always light and cloud. The music was the melody of morning, a morning on which I saw the first frost lying on the quiet grass by the river, a few days after having seen the ...

Knitting, crochet and podcasts

I just listened to Avery Trufelman’s podcast Lace and Labor. What a banger. An absolutely thrilling episode for all sorts of reasons. For a start, I loved the idea that just as the machines came for hand knitting, they have come for podcasting. So Avery Trufelman got two s...

I always love a good band documentary. This pretty much explains, how they made their by far shittiest album. But I really would have liked to know how they landed on the decision about that snare sound.

New music morning

7:00. Wake up. I recall. Taylor Swift’s new music is out today. I proceed to listen to all four new songs while still in bed, looking up to the ceiling and the sky and toward my cool, warm pillow, eager to do nothing else but appreciate the music. I am sure there will be mo...

Became (or, connecting notes to finished works)

When I walk around the world I like to take notes of what I see, hear and feel: of the rhythms and routines, of the moments of kindness, of the times when I examine and re-examine what the places where I spend the most time mean to me. I often develop my notes into publishe...

Autumn dreams

I don’t know exactly how the trees are changing, the details being so minute and complex at once, but I know that they are. I can see the change in the colours. ⁂ ⁂ ⁂ Carrying the weight of summer, the trees shed with colour and become anew, carrying messages of the presen...

What if I don’t have to go anywhere to feel the world? What if the place of my dreams is already in front of me? Herein, a dispatch from Scotland in September. ⁂ ⁂ ⁂ As I look into the distance, I see a tree with a green core at the ends of whose branches the leaves are s...

The feeling of writing

Sometimes you wipe away words and their imprint – the place where you left them – remains inked in your mind. The feeling of writing. ⁂ ⁂ ⁂ After I wrote “The sound of writing”, I started to think about how writing feels. What does it feel like to write a piece of work? I...

Sticker memories

I love how a conversation can flow from dishes to Ted Lasso 1 to stickers. This makes me think that even if I am not wandering outside – exploring the world – my mind can wander inside, or with others as part of a conversation. I digress. Of all these discussion points -- di...
