A great and unexpected treat. Staying at friends, not so old New Yorkers. And in one of them, volume six of personal histories by John McPhee, “95 at this writing”. Absolutely my favourite writer of non-fiction, and these brief glimpses are simply wonderful.

"Not ‘western civ. doesn’t exist’ nor ‘western civ. is bad’. Rather, “western civilization is real & good, captured in writing & song and we are killing it with our violence, cruelty and greed, we have become the barbarians at our own gates.”"

Of Day

I close my eyes and listen to the church bells reverberate through the city — the air, the street, the park; the hearts. Usually when I go into a bookshop, I find myself looking at all the books. Often, for nothing in particular, but rather to see what is new. Who knows wha...

Now you see it

I love this demonstration from Ghost Font: The Anti-AI Font Only Humans Can Read.

The explanation is very clear and as a proof of concept it works well. However like the newsletter that sent me there, I do wonder, how long will it continue to work.

Absolutely fascinating article (as usual) from dynomight, about what they called Pseudpocalypse, and that's the lamest thing about it. I would have gone with Pseudocollapse. Give that a short o (dog) and stress the o and in my opinion it sounds more like what they were aiming at.

Also, I used to live one street away from via Lorenzo Valla, so have filed this part away:

The idea of attributing authorship using writing style features goes back to at least 1440, when Lorenzo Valla demonstrated that the Donation of Constantine—in which Emperor Constantine supposedly donated the Roman Empire to the Catholic Church—used a vernacular that came from 400 years after Constantine’s death and was therefore a forgery.

Adding anchor links to my category pages

Earlier today, I wanted to link to a specific year of posts on my Coffee category page. Importantly, all of my posts in a category are listed on a single page. I do this because I like having an overview of all posts on a single page. And, by having all post tiles on one pag...

Multi-line links on my home page

Every so often, I publish a blog post with a longer title. When this happens, sometimes the post title wraps onto a second line in my list of blog posts on my site home page. This was a tiny detail, but one that I would often notice. Last night, I brought the design to Fron...

That was actually pretty funny. But where did all the "zombies" go at the end??? I think this had more potential, especially the ending. But I also wish they had more utilised "Ivan and the Terribles". Nonetheless, this was worth a watch.

Website superpowers

At Homebrew Website Club this week, Thomas mentioned the term “tag healing” during a discussion about tags. The definition I caught was that tag healing is related to reviewing and, if necessary, consolidating, tags used for blog posts or documents. Someone (Tabitha?) said t...

Space

This evening I listened to Peter Gabriel’s New Blood, after seeing the album mentioned on Thomas’ blog. As I listened, I kept thinking “this is my favourite song so far!” There were so many tracks that I liked. Downside-Up, Wallflower, and Mercy Street were all terrific. To...

Sunset

The valley, almost invisible. The most intense degree of aerial perspective whitens the distance below the sun. Looking through the trees I see haze. The hills fade into the ether. The occasional contour of a tree in the distance is visible. I have never seen a sunset like t...

Twenty years and a day ago, I wrote about the spurious need for balance in the media. Not much — perhaps nothing — has changed since then. I do wonder whether Andrew Revkin still thinks the effects of climate change “could take centuries to materialize”.
