Joining the IndieWeb Zine Pop Up

On Saturday I joined an IndieWeb pop up about zines, hosted by Morgan. The meetup was about both zines and the intersection of zines and personal websites – the affordances of each medium, how the mediums compare, where the mediums intersect, and more. I helped take notes (n...

I used to be a bit sniffy about the mezzaluna. I mean, what’s the point of a tool that can do only one thing. A year ago, I succumbed, in a hardware store from heaven, and now I am a total convert. Nothing else could reduce a handful of leaves so efficiently. And it doesn’t even take up that much space in the drawer vertically.

Inspired Again by Julia Evans

In August 2019 I discovered Tailwind, the CSS framework that makes responsive design relatively easy, thanks to an enthusiastic post by Julia Evans. I immediately adopted it to redesign this site. Over time, however, I found it harder and harder to maintain the styling of th...

Ready

When I start writing, sometimes I go to the search engine on my website to see if I have written about a topic before. I did this when I was writing background; foreground. I had been thinking about the contrast between backgrounds and foregrounds for a while, so I wondered ...

Background; foreground

In a way, I carry my website with me wherever I go. Technically, my website is a few keystrokes away on my phone, but I think the presence of my website extends beyond the technical. Having a website encourages me to write, I think, because I know I have a place to put and s...

This year, 16 years ago, I closed the doors of Flashforum.de. Good memories and somehow the start of what now is beyond tellerrand.

Cover art. A very dark espresso coffee in a glass cup, the better to see the essential cream floating on top, with coffee still emerging from the machine.

Latest episode looks at the hipster baristas and Chinese espresso, both of which show that even traditions that define an identity are not as immutable as people sometimes think they are.

Static IP on a Fastgate router

A week ago, I moaned that my Fastgate router kept re-assigning IPs after a power failure, which made my Pi-hole less than wonderful. I could not see how to force the router to assign a specific IP. Many kind people replied with suggestions that, if I’m honest, I did not ful...

I think the latest Apple Keyboard was verschlimmbessert

In March 2021 I got my last keyboard. Since I don’t like the idea of dongles, I tend to get Apple’s original keyboard. I also quite like how it feels and get along with it quite well. Recently my left control key started to act strange, plus a few of my keys are heavily used...

It has been a long, long time since I went to an actual geohash (as opposed to the far more approachable rabbit quest).
