play; ground

I love playing with code in the browser. I often create blank HTML files to explore ideas and to learn. I like experimenting with CSS features I have never used in a new file so I can learn the fundamentals and explore. I can start from a blank slate and see how my code – an...

Setting up a Zoom account for a community with an admin and Pro user

I have been running a monthly online event in a community I am in using my personal Zoom for a few months. We needed a Pro account so we would have unlimited meeting length, so I decided to upgrade mine with the intent of figuring out a better solution further down the line....

Co-organisers help me make events happen

I have co-hosted a lot of online events as part of the IndieWeb, the 32-Bit Cafe, and other communities. A few months ago, I reflected on how events don’t happen without organisers. Organisers put in the time to make events happen – they do all the coordination and prep work...

The bookshop

Poetical Works of Scott read one of the titles on the shelf in the Poetry section. The word “Poetical” stood out to me; we would say “poetic” now. Language changes over time., I thought to myself. We simplify words; we make new ones; some words fall out of fashion; some are ...

Telemaco Signorini’s Waverley Bridge

Whenever I go to an art gallery, I strive to make sure I have time to see any Impressionist exhibits. Impressionism is my favourite type of art. Today, with no plans for the afternoon, I went into the National Museum of Scotland. I have been a few times, so I headed directly...

A spring day in the city

The sky is wonderfully blue. I can’t see a single cloud. I wrote as I was walking through the park this morning. When I see the sky so blue, I cannot help but crane my head around to see whether I can spot a cloud. I couldn’t! Maybe there was one hidden behind the tall green...

Morning

This morning I woke up early. I like to wake up early on weekends and do some reading. I usually go to a coffee shop. There is nothing like reading a book with a coffee in hand. I’m reading Before Tomorrowland right now, which tells the story before the world in which the To...

Word of the day

Sometimes when someone is talking I will hear a word and think I haven’t heard that one before! If I hear – or read – a word I haven’t heard before, I usually look it up. I wonder what this word means!, I think to myself.

If I read a fun word, I used to make it my “word of the day” which I would share with friends. I don’t do this much anymore, although I had a lot of fun doing it – listening and spelunking for words in the veritable caverns of English to find a cool word.

With that in mind, I have a word of the day for today!

The word of the day is: haar. The Cambridge Dictionary defines haar as:

a cold mist coming from the sea to the east of Scotland or northern England:

Besides being a useful word to describe a weather condition common to Scotland – fog! – it is also fun to say. Haar. Said like a pirate would say arr, except with a “h” at the start.

Brainstorming a Notion-powered static site generator

I write my daily notes in Notion. I keep one long document called “Today” in which I keep track of TODOs and all my notes and observations from the day. While the page is called “Today”, it is a living document that often ends up getting very long. There have been a few time...

How I navigate my website wiki

I publish both blog posts and wiki-like pages on my website. The difference between these two types of pages is that the former is written at a point in time whereas the later grows over time. One of my main uses for wiki pages are lists: of ideas, of movies to watch, of not...
