🎬 Timerider: The Adventure of Lyle Swann

Movie poster for “Timerider: The Adventure of Lyle Swann”.

Ok, I must say, this was a great movie to pair with The Terminator – which was the second movie that evening. Thematically very fitting, but not nearly as good. It certainly had some good ideas and scenes, but overall, I found this pretty slow-paced and too uneventful.

🎬 Blow Out

Movie poster for “Blow Out”.

I very much enjoyed this crime story. Super well told with a great cast. I enjoyed both John Travolta's and Nancy Allen's acting as well as their characters. I like how technical this was in parts. It has great humour (the scene with the auditioning scream-dubbers: pure gold). And is suspenseful. Maybe the ending was a bit too over the top, but otherwise: thumbs up!

🎬 Poor Things

Movie poster for “Poor Things”.

This is easily one of the most entertaining movies ever. A curious and naive (in a good and very funny way) female Frankenstein‘s „monster” goes on an exploration trip – in a mostly sexual sense – driving all the men crazy along the way. Lots of very funny absurdity. Fantastic cast – especially Emma Stone of course – great sets and costumes, great dialogue and on and on. Want to watch again please.

🎬 Alps

Movie poster for “Alps”.

Of course, this was pretty absurd. A lot of scenes were just hilarious. But it also contained some serious issues like abusive relationships. And isn‘t a service to imitate the dead just a „normal“ job like everything else? Hm…

Anyhow: good movie. And I also vers much enjoyed the greek original: quite a pleasant language.

European Court of Human Rights prohibits weakening of secure end-to-end encryption

On the 13th this month the European Court of Human Rights bans general weakening of secure end-to-end encryption with its verdict. Lastly, as regards the requirement to submit to the security services information necessary to decrypt electronic communications if they are encrypted, the Court observes that international bodies have argued that encryption provides strong technical safeguards against unlawful access to the content of communications and has therefore been widely used as a means of protecting the right to respect for private life and for the privacy of correspondence online.

🎬 Aces Go Places IV: You Never Die Twice

Movie poster for “Aces Go Places IV: You Never Die Twice”.

Another Mondo Bizarr feature. And this was just 100% fun. It has a lot of Jackie Chan trademarks: great action, quirky humour, likeable characters and a whole lot of breakneck stunts (OMG they had a little boy dangling on the outside of a skyscraper). Very much recommended, if you’re into that sort of film.

🎬 Midnite Spares

Movie poster for “Midnite Spares”.

It’s always fun watching a movie with the Mondo Bizarr audience. And this was no exception. But boy, this was a bit rough: while the story is simple enough, it’s still hard to follow, it has less action than expected, and it gets sidetracked by too many characters and unnecessary scenes. So, not exactly my thing.

🎬 Invasion of the Body Snatchers

The story certainly has its length. But otherwise there’s lots to like: from the concept of the pods, to the special effects, Jeff Goldblum and Leonard Nimoy, and at last a surprise ending.

🎬 RoboCop

This has a good story, and was overall a well-rounded experience. It's still a pretty typical action movie, and has a few clichés. But it's certainly well above average. I was a bit surprised by how brutal some scenes were. It's almost like in a splatter-movie, and really well done. But boy, how they shoot Murphy to pieces is just horrifying. But the film also has some great humor in it: like the super-duper killing robot ED209, which can't descend a flight of stairs and subsequently lands on his back like a helpless bug. Anyhow, can recommend.

Trust and the Issues with context

Trust is important! It provides mechanisms in public key infrastructure (PKI) that keep our (digital) world turning. Windows and Linux follow different approaches. Both have their issues… The Windows world of trust Microsoft Windows has the Windows Certificate Store. One for the Machine (certlm.msc), providing the baseline, and another one for the User context (certmgr.msc). There are attempts to separate certain types of certificates by their intent e.g. Trusted People for S/MIME signatures and encryption vs.

🎬 Opera

Movie poster for “Opera”.

I don't know what to think about this. It's so well filmed, and looks so good. And it has lots of good moments. But I think I can't get over the fact that this is then spoiled by nonsense dialogues, a weak story, bad dubbing, and weird music choices. Maybe this is meant to be funny? Is it a parody? I don't know. Weird movie.

🎬 Diner

Movie poster for “Diner”.

So, me and the guys had dinner, and we then went to see this on the big screen on film. It was a great evening. And this movie was enjoyable, too: a great cast with their distinct characters in a dialogue-heavy movie. And up to all sort of shenanigans during a what seems to be a turning point in all of their lives. Quite a bit of macho-attitudes and actions, but overall very enjoyable. Has a great cheesy, silly, over-the-top dance scene. :)

XML to markdown with XSLT

I’m currently reworking the process of how software documentation is produced. At the moment of writing we have many manual steps involved updating Microsoft Word document and finally exporting it to the portable document format (PDF). One of the steps is to copy a list of events including their identifiers, category, level and message, from an XML source to a Table in the word document. The new process will allow to have source code management compatible plain text files as a source, from which a PDF is generated.

🎬 Eagle vs Shark

Movie poster for “Eagle vs Shark”.

Well, thanks very much for this healthy dose of kiwi accent. VLC autoplayed this for us after Dream Scenario; and it was already late at night, but we couldn’t stop watching. We watched the second half on the next day, though. Anyhow… this was a very enjoyable and silly love story - kiwi style.

🎬 Dream Scenario

Very original and entertaining story. Nic Cage is great once more. The last quarter was not quite up to par with the rest; but other than that, very much recommended.

Stilistisch und schauspielerisch super. Die Story hat mich aufgrund ständiger Umwege etwas liegengelassen. Aber das ist vielleicht auch so beabsichtigt. Interessantes Ding.

🎬 They Live

Movie poster for “They Live”.

A great movie to end the year. Loved how the whole put-those-sunglasses-on-to-see-the-truth stuff was done. Fantastic and suspenseful story, good score, nice action with a hilarious fight scene in the middle. Saw this at the local cinema, which made this a little more special even.

🎬 The Prowler

Movie poster for “The Prowler”.

Solid old-school slasher. Could have had some more explanation of the motive for me, but that's about it regarding criticism. The special effects of the kills are ones of the best I've seen. And it has otherwise good action, a good cast, and some good humour.

🎬 Talk to Me

Movie poster for “Talk to Me”.

This was good! It's a bit like Flatliners meets The Sixth Sense. It was suspenseful, had great acting, great pace, and a real good story (although, I didn't fully get it (,yet?)). It's one of the better newer horror movies for sure. And I'd watch it again.
