🎬 The Surfer

Movie poster for “The Surfer”.

At various points, I felt like this movie might ride a more surreal, illusionary wave. But that never happened. And this is why I felt there are some shortcomings in the plot and characters. But otherwise this does a really effective job portraying the terror he faces. It's a bit like Funny Games. Not as drastic, though. I liked how this all played out in the same place throughout the movie. I'm still not quite sure what the movie wants to say. But that's ok, and might be intentional anyway.

🎬 It Follows

Solid horror movie. I liked the obviously Carpenter-esque soundtrack. And also how the "creatures" looked like and how the movie looked and felt in general - more like an 70s/80s horror film. But I found those "creatures" not menacing enough and the story was a bit so-so in the end.

This was really entertaining. I think it all looked great, the Creepers are well done - and are really likeable - and the acting is fantastic, too. Sure, it's over the top, but that fits the movie well. Robert Pattinson's performance it's just perfect IMO. But also Mark Ruffalo's and Naomi Ackie's. I like the whole idea of the film, and its whole vibe. It's funny, too. Would watch again!

🎬 One Battle After Another

Like these kind of absurdist trip kind of movies. Leo is fantastic, and so is everyone else to be honest. Although I found Sean Penn's character Lockjaw a little too over the top. Two scenes that I will certainly remember: First, how the car chase at the end is filmed. Haven't really seen anything like this. Second: that stunt and whole sequence where he falls down between two buildings trying to jump the gap, then still gets up, only to get tasered around the next corner. As impressive as it is hilarious.

🎬 The Texas Chain Saw Massacre

Movie poster for “The Texas Chain Saw Massacre”.

Believe it or not, I have not seen this previously. It's relentless. It's uncomfortable. It's horrifying. That was quite the trip, seeing it at the cinema.

🎬 Bad Taste

Movie poster for “Bad Taste”.

Well, this was just the right desert after TCM that evening. Bad Taste was one of my earliest splatter/underground movies I've seen. It was great seeing this again after all these years. Splendid splattertainment!

🎬 Berberian Sound Studio

…or The Italian Vegetable Massacre. Toby Jones - which I really didn't know before - is absolutely fantastic. He truly transports how one might feel in such a menacing environment. And the film leaves no doubt it criticises these types of people, and hence the production of ...

Using a Data List With Contact Form 7

I love using the list attribute in combination with a data list. It just came up in a client project again, where the basic requirement was to only allow a certain combination of post codes and cities in an application form. My first instinct was to use JS to validate the in...

I really like the new FetchLater API - it doesn’t just keep a request alive after a page is gone like Beacon API does, but it also handles when to send it. Beacon leaves that to you, and no window event (beforeunload, pagehide, etc.) covers all cases - e.g. mobile minimizing suspends it. Plus, you can finally send JSON with application/json instead of text/plain. And it's easier to debug too! 🥳

Would love to see it making an appearance in Firefox and WebKit too, @jaffathecake @jensimmons ❤️

It is New Photos From Daniel Day! He published his photos from May 2024 and I make an appearance. That is not the reason I am posting this, btw – I just enjoy looking at his images + funny comments. Last year in December, he managed to post five new months! Will he be able to repeat that record-breaking output? Stay tuned.

Two Square Kilometers

My radius here in the city is quite limited. I have the same commute every day, passing the same locations. When I am out with the kids, we have a couple of favorite places we visit (playgrounds, parks, etc.). All in all, it is probably only two square kilometers, so it is no wonder that I start to revisit certain subjects from time to time. A41 is a perfect example of this, but in this particular case, I turned it on its head and made it a series. (The challenge is now to find different angles.) But recently, I find myself recognizing more and more places/landmarks/subjects I have photographed before. Some examples include these trees (1 and 2), the TV tower (1, 2, and 3), or the RWE tower (1, 2, 3, and 4). There’s no conclusion to this, just an observation I made.

🎬 Inception

Movie poster for “Inception”.

Haven't seen this again since it came out. And I enjoyed this a lot now! That dream-within-a-dream concept is so good, and Nolan can just go crazy with the action. And it's still one of his movies you can more easily follow. Technically it's flawless IMO. And that ending is so perfect!

Good HWC yesterday. I finally removed SASS from the build-pipeline for this site - using just plain CSS now - and also updated my view-transition syntax, so that those work again now. But apart from this, it was mostly us talking about various topics from home networking and self-hosting to - as often - AI and LLMs.

The next HWC DUS is on Dec. 18th.
