🎬 Running for Good: The Fiona Oakes Documentary

Movie poster for “Running for Good: The Fiona Oakes Documentary”.

Fiona Oakes’ running achievements are incredible. But her personality might be even more inspiring. Quote from the movie’s official website:

With overcoming her own adversity, Fiona’s true drive to achieve incredible feats of speed and human endurance are motivated by a deep desire to raise awareness for the plight of animals. Her achievements help fund a 450+ animal sanctuary that she takes care of every day.

Ordered some 300+ prints the other day. It’s always something different holding physical photographs in your hand. Even when it’s relatively cheap ones, like these.

I usually use ALDI Fotos and I have been very satisfied with their service so far. The main argument for them is that they can print on matte paper with a white border. And it turned out they can even print my panoramic images with only little cropping.

I should really make more of a routine of ordering prints. The more photos I get out of my computer and into the physical world the better. Gotta feed the archive!

🎧 The Somberlain – Dissection

Their debut is also fantastic. Everything’s a bit less refined on this one. But I think this is actually adding character and makes the album more interesting.

🎧 Storm of the Light’s Bane – Dissection

I’m listening to Dissection a lot currently. This was an important album in my teenage years. And it still holds up! It’s killer front to back and absolutely deserves its status as “a classic”.

🎬 Halloween 2

Movie poster for “Halloween 2”.

Interesting that this sequel starts immediately where part one ended and continues the very same night. And I think this was good. It’s a bit much with Michael Myers’ invincibility, and not as good as the first part, but other than that, solid slasher territory.

🎬 The French Dispatch

Movie poster for “The French Dispatch”.

This is quite a trip! As usual for Wes Anderson, this has lovingly made sets and scenes, is funny, fast-paced and has an all-star cast. I definitely enjoyed it – but it was a little too much on the first watch. There’s just so much detail and complexity in the individual episodes – and even single shots – that my concentration was draining rather quickly. I probably want to watch this a few more times. And in slow-motion. And I don’t know if that’s good or bad – or what my final verdict would be. Talking about this movie afterwards was definitely a lot of fun. I say: go watch it!

🎬 Friday the 13th Part 2

Movie poster for “Friday the 13th Part 2”.

A series of uninspired kills and full of clichés. If you’re into (classic) horror movies (like me) this might still be an enjoyable watch. But it’s certainly not as good as the first part, and there are certainly better horror movies out there in general.

🎧 Your Time To Shine – Monolord

It’s rather Monolord’s time to shine. Because this might be their best output to date. All five songs are winners. There are plenty of great fuzzy riffs again. But the star might be those brilliant melodies.

🎬 Minari

Movie poster for “Minari”.

This movie didn’t have any elements in it that you’d call spectacular. It’s subtle. To me, it was about relationships, and prejudices or how a first impression of a person can be wrong. And about the setbacks and victories – big and small – of life.

Bought concert tickets for “Der Weg einer Freiheit” in Köln in November. It’ll be the first concert after a looooong break.

🎬 B-Movie: Lust & Sound in West-Berlin 1979-1989

Movie poster for “B-Movie: Lust & Sound in West-Berlin 1979-1989”.

Entertaining and somewhat tongue-in-cheek documentary about the Berlin music and art scenes during the 80s. All told through the eyes of narrator Mark Reeder. If you’re into music in general or into “Die Toten Hosen”, “Die Ärzte”, Nick Cave, “Die Einstürzenden Neubauten”, Jörg Buttgereit (and many more) in particular, you’ll enjoy this!

🎬 mother!

Movie poster for “mother!”.

“What a nightmare!” was my comment while watching this movies. And I meant that from the mother’s perspective, which is the one you get to see as the viewer.

This film made me really uncomfortable. And I applaud it for this! And feeling uncomfortable is appropriate and makes perfect sense, too! But that sense had to explained to me, to be honest. Despite the confusing plot (at first), I was all on board with the movie. Until this over-the-top ending – then I really wasn’t sure what to make of this movie. But Bernd gave me a hint regarding the metaphors afterwards, and then – as already mentioned – it all made perfect sense. And I loved it! And I will probably watch this again some time!

Reminded me of Haneke’s “Funny Games” at times. So yeah, if you’re in for some light and feel-good entertainment, this is not the movie for you!

📄 Berlin

In September I spontaneously visited Berlin for 10 days. To see the city – which I don’t really know – and to hang out with Tim and Sophie. And I had to do a bit of remote work, too.

Oh man, I’m so behind on my photos. I’ve developed and scanned everything until and including June. But there are now 25 more rolls to scan and currently 13 rolls still to develop. And I haven’t edited much from this year, either. Makes me a bit nervous about being able to keep up with my photo journal in any timely fashion. But I need and want to! But I will probably end up posting a whole year again, as I did with 2020.

Today, I at least finally ordered myself a 5-reel development tank, which will make film-developing quite a bit quicker and more convenient, compared to using two 2-reel tanks.
