Alex Pretti's family slams the Trump admin for hiding information about Pretti's killing:

"The government’s steadfast protection of the identities of Alex’s killers is particularly cruel given the campaign to publicly disparage Alex after his death by falsely accusing him of domestic terrorism."

Paleovirology: How HIV Started a Century Before Anyone Noticed

I’ve been vaguely aware for awhile that researchers had traced the origins of HIV/AIDS back to Sub-Saharan Africa. But I didn’t know the whole story, which turns out to be really fascinating. For decades, one man was blamed for bringing AIDS to America. But the “Patient Z...

Sad to see this train crash in Spain. Very close to the rail lines I took earlier this year.

As part of the preliminary investigation, authorities said the Renfe train probably struck the Iryo train from behind, causing two coaches to derail.

This should never happen.

People are probably influenced too much by price and benchmarks. When GPT-6.1 Terra came out, it was panned, but now Artificial Analysis v5 shows it’s better than Fable 5.1. Fact is most of the top models are really good now.

Braintrust query: Why do you love Markdown? I have a theory why people love it so much — simplicity. You can’t hide any garbage in a Markdown file. You can answer on GitHub or Twitter. Didn’t post on Masto or Bluesky because the prompt is 761 chars, over the limit for both systems. I think […]

I really like the Apple TV show Small Prophets. It’s silly and fun, but also intelligent and beautifully presented. Michael Palin of Monty Python is a supporting actor playing the main character’s father. He’s famous for a lot of Monty Python sketches, esp the one about the dead parrot. “He’s not dead, he’s pining for […]

Braintrust query: Why do you love Markdown? I have a theory why people love it so much -- simplicity. You can't hide any garbage in a Markdown file. You can answer on GitHub or Twitter. Didn't post on Masto or Bluesky because the prompt is 761 chars, over the limit for both systems. I think I'm finally done with truncating well-written prose to fit into one vendor's idea of what's enough text for me. I want to make that a distant memory. So another thing I love about Markdown -- no freaking character limit.
