Monday's parting shots

Photos by Stacie Joy  We spotted Bronx-based artist Andre Trenier today on Avenue A at Sixth Street... where he was working on a second mural for the "Loisaida Walls" on the Con Ed building... featuring NYC native Mikey Cole of Mikey Likes It ice cream... Treiner used to create the pop-culture murals for Mikey Likes It when the shop was on Avenue A.

A visitor one October evening

Via the EVG inbox...

Early Sunday evening, long-time residents of Avenue A experienced a visitor. The visitor was perched outside one of their bedroom windows on the fire escape. A perch that for decades attracted the omnipresent cooing morning dove and neighborhood pigeons, occasionally a large, portly one.

On this night, though, they were surprised by a very large, unexpected avian visitor perched in this very spot. It stayed long enough to pose for a few portraits, at least five minutes, before spreading its wings, dropping from its perch, then rising and soaring into the distance.

The residents hadn't seen this in over 30 years and weren't sure the visitor would stop by again, but they'd be ready to greet them if they did.

I loved the term Big Undo so much, of course I had to get the domain. I started putting up my usual placeholder site but realized I should do this page in Markdown, not HTML. It looks fabulous. Markdown is right. It’s sobriety, go back to the beginning and put the potency in the ideas, […]

The Big Undo

I remember how revolutionary the first web was, but then a series of tech companies took it over and “had their way” with it. The first was Netscape and they added JavaScript to steal the thunder from “Sun” (a long story). Then Microsoft crushed Netscape by cutting off their air supply, and they piled up […]

I loved the term Big Undo so much, of course I had to get the domain. I started putting up my usual placeholder site but realized I should do this page in Markdown, not HTML. It looks fabulous. Markdown is right. It's sobriety, go back to the beginning and put the potency in the ideas, give writers the space to write. Get the F out of my way with your freaky character limits. Anyway I'm full of manifesto these days. The money people strangled the web. I think it's time for the creative people to make it work for real.

Looks nice. Summary of blog post: "A Hacker News like service where the site doesn’t own anything. Every link, upvote, and comment lives in the user’s own account on the Bluesky network, not in her database."

I made John Palfrey get a blog. :-)

I know him from Berkman in the 00s where we made some great mischief together resulting in podcasting and other cool stuff.

And as it was in the 00s, having a blog now is a place of power.

Obama is doing the Old Obama campaign speech and it's something to see. He's got a few gray hairs, but he's still got the energy and chutzpah. I'd love to see him and Bernie Sanders on the same stage before this campaign is over.

'Curb Your Enthusiasm' Does Wordle

I play Wordle everyday as a mental exercise and I mostly lose my streaks by either traveling or forgetting to do the word of the day, but I have been fooled a few times. I also share results with a couple of my friends via texting.

For fun we create our own Wordle Puzzles to try and stump each other.

I've been finishing up the last two seasons of Curb Your Enthusiasm, since I never watched them before when Wordle came up in a couple of skits.

They made me burst out laughing.

"You gave away Wordle? You fuck! That's so low."

"You deserved it."

"You sicken me. You know what I'm going to wake up at 5 o'clock every morning and giving Wordle away and you'll never do another Wordle the rest of your life!"

The next segment with Ted Danson and Susie was also very funny.

Open thread.

SpaceX Whines About Space Collisions After Gutting Regulators That Oversee That Sort Of Thing

Michael Nicolls, SpaceX’s vice president for Starlink and president of xAI, appeared recently at the International Astronautical Congress in Turkey to lament the rise of space collisions as Musk and Bezos flood the night sky with low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellites. According to Nicolls, there’s been a decided lack of coordination among space companies as they’ve […]
