Computing polar triangles with linear algebra

The previous post defined the polar triangle of a spherical triangle in terms of its sides and angles, but it doesn’t construct the triangle. It only specifies one of a family of triangles located anywhere on the sphere. How do we know that polar triangles exist? There is a geometric construction that starts with a […]

Duality in spherical trigonometry

I’ve written before about the law of cosines on a sphere: cos(c) = cos(a) cos(b) + sin(a) sin(b) cos(C). But that’s just one of two laws of cosines on a sphere. The equation above is the law of cosines for sides. The law of cosines for angles is typographically very similar, just inverting the case of […]

MacOS Extensions pack for the Apple Network Server v1.0

By now regular readers of this blog are quite familiar with my affection for the 1996 Apple Network Server, Apple's Unix-through-and-through $10,000+ server that only shipped with, and only officially ran, Harpoon, its unique superset of IBM AIX. An ANS 500, the lower tier...

List of Vim forks

Here are the Vim forks I know about:

  • Neovim: “a Vim-based text editor engineered for extensibility and usability, to encourage new applications and contributions.”

  • Vim Classic: “a stable, long-term support fork of the ubiquitous text editor, maintained without the assistance of generative AI tools.”

  • EVi: “a hard-fork of Vim v9.1.0 (Jan 2024) before AI was used in the project.”

  • MacVim: “a macOS version of the Vim text editor, providing a graphical user interface for Vim, while tightly integrating with macOS and providing features specific to the platform.”

This list doesn’t include Vim-inspired editors like Kakoune, Vim-style plugins for other editors like IdeaVim, or Vim “distributions” like LazyVim.

Contact me if you know of other forks!

Elon Musk Just Gave Europe a Reason to Replace American Technology

I’ve been in London for the last month and have heard policymakers react to the wake up call Elon Musk just delivered.  The decision of the U.S. to shut off intelligence and throttle the military version of Starlink called Starshield to Ukraine may have been a blip in the news in the US, but it […]

Book Review: Get Ahead of Being Dead by Evie King ★★★★☆

After reading Evie King's previous book Ashes To Admin - Tales from the Caseload of a Council Funeral Officer I was eager to read her not-quite-a-sequel. We know what happens after death; paperwork. Gas bills need to be cancelled, funeral wishes need to be carried out, money needs to be apportioned between warring family members. When you die, you won't be there to experience the annoyance and …
