We need a new fresh start for the web, and at the same time for a new democracy. It seems one has a lot to do with the other.

AIPAC Is Spending Millions — Just Not Under Its Own Name

A Lever investigation traces how the Israel lobby is routing millions through groups promoting women, reproductive rights, and Latino candidates — and how AI interests and other power brokers are adopting the strategy.

'The Body On Bobby': Trump Swoons Over RFK Jr’s Body

Of all the possible entries on my Trump bingo card, homoeroticism, especially at Trump rallies, was probably in last place. Maybe even after kindness and generosity. But here we are. The guy who kept thirsting for Republican Sen. Jon Husted’s ass and marveling over the bodi...

We are so used to the App Store model that I don’t think we pause enough to note that app distribution is actually clunky and slow now. In 1996 it was faster for me to do a Mac app build, copy it to a floppy disk, and drive to a friend’s house with it than it is to ship an iOS app in 2026.

A critical PHP fix, WordPress 7.2 Beta 1, Notes in the margin, and more—Weekend Edition 378

Howdy, Before anything else: check which version of PHP your sites run. On October 21, the PHP project released fixes for two critical vulnerabilities, and they affect any server running a PHP application, not only WordPress. You’ll find your version under Tools → Site Health → Info → Server in your WordPress admin. If you […]

Looking over Block’s voice model Dessa, this aside in the announcement post made me laugh:

LLMs need an insane amount of text. Dessa learned language from hundreds of times fewer words (in fairness, LLMs also have to learn C++ and whatever the hell Angular is).

Marco Arment blogs about community and his break from Mastodon:

My break from Mastodon has been a relief in some ways, as I’ve felt increasing divergence between what I wanted and what I was getting from it, but I didn’t know where else to go.

The social web is fragmented now. There’s no longer an obvious “quit Twitter and go to Mastodon” answer like there used to be. The solution is more blogs, of course!

Why did the Knicks lose the first two games of the season? It's a veteran team, they know how to start an NBA season, but the fans and the press aren't ready to move on yet. They're still reveling in the feeling of the Knicks winning. But imho there is no feeling with that, the feeling was in the moment, and man they did give us some moment. We will relish the video for the rest of time. But for now, every game they play will feel significant because of who they were not who they are now.

Andrew Shell, who created and runs the rssCloud server we use here, is creating a connection from rssCloud and webSub to WebSockets. I’ve wanted this for a long time, but now I’m planning on a desktop version of FeedLand, we will need it, pretty soon for instant updates of feeds we are subscribed to.

One of the reasons I’m working on the Web of Markdown is that my main blog of 32+ years is being kicked off the Google Web. I need a new home where the web religion is still practiced, and one of the commandments of our religion is “Google is a guest on the web, as […]

Clueless Michele Tafoya Points Fingers At Flanagan Over Trump’s Medicaid, SNAP Cuts

Republican Minnesota Senate candidate Michelle Tafoya is either stupid or lying when she blamed Lieut. Gov. Peggy Flanagan for allowing Medicaid and school meals to slip away from the state. Peggy Flanagan and Tim Walz did not gut these vital programs. Your lord and savior,...

LISTEN: Immigration Is the Backdrop to This Election

Talking to brand new immigrants to New York City, it reminds you of what an amazing place this is. They want to come here because of what it stands for. Having been a local reporter in this town for as long as I have, I know how grinding the bureaucracy is and how difficult it […]
