Today in class I was talking about how Auden, in “At the Grave of Henry James,” makes use of the Prayer of Humble Access, and one of my students told me that she had recently, in her choir, been singing a setting of that — which turns out to be quite beautiful. It was composed by Samuel Sebastian Wesley (1810-1876).

Yankees Sweep Boston in Two Games, by Combined Score of 18-2
nytimes.com/athletic/7648172/2026/09/30/yankees-beat-red-sox-mlb-wild-card-series/
In the 6th inning last night the Yankees were only ahead 2-0, and Red Sox first baseman and all-around jackass Willson Contreras hit a home run, closing it to 2-1. Contreras decided to walk around the bases. The baseball gods do not look kindly upon that sort of ostentatiously belligerent showboatery. (Especially when your team is still losing.) Contreras circled the bags after his dinger like a rooster letting you know he just banged a few hens — but at a slower pace.
In the next inning, Contreras wasn’t paying attention and his laziness allowed a Yankee to reach base after striking out on a wild pitch. That started the rally that resulted in the blowout final score.

Google Tacitly Acknowledges the End of ChromeOS as It Launches Googlebooks
Ryan Whitwam, Ars Technica: Like Chromebooks, Googlebooks are guaranteed 10 years of software support. However, the latest Chromebook models won’t get that in the traditional way. Google’s support page says that it plans to continue ChromeOS support through “mid-2034,” so there are already devices with support windows beyond that. […] Rather than get into a […]⌥ Permalink

EagleFiler 1.9.22
EagleFiler 1.9.22 is a maintenance release of my Mac file/note organizer and e-mail archiving app. This version works around various bugs in macOS 27, adds capture support for the Thorium Web browser, and improves importing from Mariner Paperless. macOS 27 broke several things with drag and drop out of Apple Mail. Simply trying to read […]

I Said No and Apple Said Yes
David Bushell (Mastodon, Hacker News): I discovered that macOS 15.3 had enabled a feature that was phoning home every 15 minutes with personal data. And that I said “no” and turned it off. […] And today I discovered that Apple had [in macOS 27] removed the “no” switch. […] Digging through macOS 27 settings I […]

Accessing the Keychain Without the Password
Bob Gendler: Since macOS 26.4, there’s been an issue with the keychain hiding in plain sight and that issue is it’ll take ANY password. Say what? The story behind CVE-2026–43728. […] Where this is a bit more of a kicker…you can reset the keychain password without even knowing the real one. […] Now did Apple […]
Feed titles for readers
When designing your RSS feeds, the top level title should be the title of the user's account. So if Bluesky had a feed for each user, the channel-level <title> element of the feed would be
<title>Bluesky: Mark Cuban</title>
Why? Well because readers need context. And it's easy.
And feeds are showing up in places where there isn't much room for the titles, so you have to make your characters count.
Bluesky shows the user's address, imho it should be the string the user chooses for their presence on the site, usually simply their name.
Arrow points to Mark Cuban on Bluesky. That's what the title should say.If you see me posting more photos than usual, that will be because I am getting to know my new iPhone 18 Pro — my previous model was a 15 — and figuring out what the new version of Halide offers. Halide really is an extraordinary app: I especially admire the various ways it allows the user to bypass Apple’s computational-photography algorithms.

How Meta Uses A.I. Data Centres to Avoid Billions in Federal Taxes
Kashmir Hill, Jesse Drucker, Eli Tan, and Mike Isaac, New York Times: Here’s what Meta is doing: For tax purposes, the company classifies its enormous, multibillion-dollar data centers as “pilot models.” Under a tax credit created in the 1980s to spur innovation, companies can get a rebate for supplies, but only if they are being […]⌥ Permalink

Backporting SwiftUI APIs
Dave DeLong: I can improve the process of removing backwards compatibility shims by using conditional compilation to remind me when they’re no longer necessary!
