I am still wrapping my head around the tangled web of how this house of cards is stacked. The Exec Dir does the role well, but is paid by Automattic itself. In other OSS, if the project isn't owned by a company, the Foundation pays that staff so that things remain impartial. Also, hosting arrangments may be clear as mud as well for what Matt considers his personal site, that isn't part of the foundation either.
