How Bad Is CO2?

This is how you fool people. “Then consider that the left graph comes from a consortium of over 90 climate scientists, who took 7 types of samples from 32 countries. Meanwhile, the right graph comes from one data point: ocean surface temperatures of the Sargassum Sea. It shows that this region was especially warm during… Read More »How Bad Is CO2?

As the summer season comes to an end I always start thinking about the end of the year, and the start of a new one. That naturally lends itself to thinking about goals. One of my goals for the next 1-2 quarters is to improve my posting cadence while I continue to make progress on @hypertexting.com

I admire people who have mastered “building in public”. Building mode and writing/posting mode have always been two separate mindsets for me. One naturally dovetails into the other, but I’ve never managed to maintain a steady stream of content when I’m in builder mode.

RSS has a business problem, not a technical one

I believe RSS syndication has a fundamental problem that limits its adoption. It's not anything technical — not the format, not the readers. It's the content: it is very hard to make a living by publishing full content via RSS. How the web pays for content today Most profess...

New Skin

 New Skin

I shed my skin on a Thursday evening. I had been itching for it all week, feeling the squeeze of it when I sat down or bent my arms. I should have waited for the weekend, but I felt like I would burst. I rang in sick on Friday, with

Meet the Guy Who Just Trademarked ‘The S Thing’

“But drawing the S thing was addictive, and in the same way I found myself completely addicted to the history, mystery and magic of the symbol. I just wanted to invest and continue.”

Son of a bitch. Someone registered a trademark for that cool millennial “S”. And this article is six years old even

🔗 Evan Shapiro:

‘The Creator Economy’ is over and ‘The Affinity Economy’ is here.

I don’t live in the ‘xyz economy’ worlds - 🖇️ far too many to keep track of. BUT for a while now I have been talking and writing about the global movement from ‘Systems of Record’ to ‘Systems of Engagement’ - and the need for people and businesses to not throw away all of their systems and ‘drop in a new stack’ - but rather to start to think differently about what they already have and how to use that to ‘engage for the future’ and not ‘broadcast history’.

On that we seem to be aligned.

Have faith

Some of my mother’s ashes are in a little cove in a little lake nearby.

In the summer, I sometimes take a kayak out for a visit. No matter what is on my mind, no matter what is troubling me, I always get the same answer.

“Have faith.”

Me: why did you do ____, Claude?

Claude: you’re right, it’s worth being up front about that…

Me: I don’t think you know what “being up front about something” means! 🤦🏽‍♂️

Over at 🔗 eg Innovations .. they have been thinking about ‘team alignment’ .. this short analysis tool is an interesting gateway to getting to answers as well as getting a better understanding of your own environment.

One person’s answers give you a data point. Ask your infrastructure, operations, application, service delivery and workplace teams to complete it independently, and you may find everyone has a different view of how well your monitoring actually performs. That gap between answers is the insight.

People love Markdown because it's impossible to hide the crud. And because people love it so much it's become a favorite of tech startups esp in the AI field. This is a great turn of events. We're getting back to the web, and the sooner everyone gets on board, the better. I've written about this for a few years. Everything in Markdown, it's just enough HTML. And with that, Microsoft has created a white flag, here's all your data dear users, in Markdown, to use as you please. Instead of waiting for Claude et al to start reading Word files.

On the other hand, why doesn't Microsoft, which owns GitHub, make a Slack-alike tool that manages the issues sections on repos. Slack is a big part of the default communication system, but GitHub is another very big part. And the great thing is that both these products, owned by huge tech companies, have an ethos of open APIs. Every part replaceable. Small pieces loosely joined. We are family.

A big corner-turn in the Atlantis project, the new version of Frontier for modern OSes, in development, just me and Claude Code so far. We now have the means to update the root, so anything implemented in script code can be released without fuss, using RSS of course. We're using a method that will be new to almost everyone, something I created in 2014 or so (will check) called codecasting. And today I did all my programming work in Atlantis. It feels just like Frontier, with a future. ;-)

In the Crosshairs of Justice and the End of Bremen

I spent most of the weekend in Bremen, Germany. Strolling around the city, I encountered two sculptures that I really liked. I saw this right after I arrived in the city. Before anything, its scale made me stop. At first I thought it was a futuristic scene. Then I realized ...

Shadow AI is already inside your company. Here’s how to get control of it

“A tool that looks like a harmless assistant may have permission to read email, summarize files, access customer records, connect to ticketing systems or interact with source-code repositories,”

Reminds me of how everyone had a dozen of those sketchy spyware browser toolbars like BonziBuddy in the 90s and early 2000s but worse.
