The lab, the factory and the dentist

At the lab, they don’t know the right answer. They are explorers and scientists. If you’re not failing, you’re not trying hard enough. The work at the lab requires mutual support, shared information and a commitment to the process of discovery. At the factory, the answer is known. It’s productivity that’s being pursued. Do it […]

Online Piracy Costs the UK 9,400 Nurses a Year, If Pirates Keep Their Word

A new UK industry report says illegal streaming costs the government the equivalent of 9,400 NHS nurse salaries a year. This missed tax money is linked to a broader £1.35 billion annual hit to the economy. The billion-pound figure is extrapolated from what some pirates say they would pay if piracy disappeared. This hypothetical scenario comes with the necessary caveats, including a mismatch between what people say in surveys, and what they do.

Mount Plauris

I’ve been thinking about this mountain for more than a decade at this point, for reasons I’m gonna explain later. I wanted to hike it a few weeks ago, but there was a raging wildfire not too far from it on a nearby mountain, so I had to wait. Wait for better air conditions, ...

Indonesia’s most dangerous fires are burning underground

Indonesia’s dangerous peat fires are surging early in the 2026 fire season as a strengthening El Niño and severe drought dry out wetlands that can burn underground for months. These slow smoldering fires are especially destructive because they release far more fine particles and several pollutants than typical tropical forest fires, while thick smoke can make them difficult for satellites to detect.

Scientists find a weak spot in one of the deadliest brain cancers

Researchers may have found a new way to weaken glioblastoma’s defenses against treatment. Blocking a protein called SET prevented tumors from forming in preclinical models, while targeting related proteins made cancer cells more vulnerable to radiation. The strategy works by restoring activity of PP2A, an enzyme that glioblastoma cells appear to suppress. Human testing will be needed to determine whether the approach is safe and effective.

AI can now control fusion plasma faster than humans can react

Princeton researchers have tested an AI system that can monitor and control fusion plasma in milliseconds, reacting far faster than a human operator. In one experiment, it predicted a damaging instability about 200 milliseconds before it appeared and adjusted the plasma to stop it from forming.
