The Library Hold List Is My Best Anti-Impulse System

I have started putting books on my library hold list instead of buying them immediately. This has two useful effects: I get a cooling-off period, and I find out whether I actually want to read the book badly enough to wait for it.

Sometimes the hold arrives weeks later and I am still interested. Sometimes I quietly cancel it, which is useful information too. The Queens library system is doing a better job of managing my attention than most productivity advice.

Paperless-ngx lets you decide how documents are stored on disk with PAPERLESS_FILENAME_FORMAT. By default you end up with folders and filenames full of capital letters and spaces, which is annoying the moment you touch them from a terminal.

A QR code is not an accessible menu

A QR-only menu assumes a customer has a charged smartphone, mobile data, a compatible device, enough vision to scan the code, and confidence navigating an unfamiliar website. That is a lot of assumptions for a bowl of soup.

A genuinely inclusive setup is simple: keep a printed menu available, use readable type and strong contrast, make the QR page keyboard-friendly, and let staff take an order without treating the request as an inconvenience. The printed version should not be hidden behind a performance of asking nicely.

Digital options can be useful. They are not a substitute for offering a usable alternative.

התמונה הכי טובה בטיול לא תמיד מחכה בסוף המסלול

בטיולי יום בנגב אני עדיין נופל לאותה טעות: מחכה לנקודת התצפית, לאור המושלם, לרגע שבו הנוף ייראה כמו תמונה שכבר ראיתי. ואז אני מגלה שהתמונה שנשארת איתי צולמה דווקא עשר דקות קודם, ליד הרכב או בשביל צדדי.

מה אני מחפש עכשיו
צל חד על קיר סלע, בקבוק מים שנשען על תיק, סימני צמיגים שנחתכים באלכסון, או אדם קטן בתוך מרחב גדול. דברים שלא נראים כמו ״יעד״, אבל מספרים איפה הייתי ומה היה הקצב של היום.

בטלפון זה גם יותר הגיוני לי. אני לא מנסה לבנות קומפוזיציה מורכבת או לתקן את כל הצבעים אחר כך. עוצר, זז שני צעדים, מצלם, ובודק אם התמונה ברורה גם בלי הסבר ארוך. לפעמים מספיק שהצל והאור יהיו במקום הנכון.

יכול להיות שאני מפספס את התמונה המרשימה באמת, אבל בינתיים אני מעדיף לחזור מטיול עם כמה פריימים קטנים שמחזירים את התחושה, ולא רק עם צילום אחד שמוכיח שהייתי שם.
