Tropical Storm Bertha is making landfall. What is not happening is any mention of the phrase “Gulf of Mexico”. (NBC, CBS, CNN) – just “Gulf” or “Gulf Coast”. Hmph!

Just because it's a container doesn't mean attackers can't do damages to your system. It's possible to obtain cloud credentials through a container shell.

It's not enough to use containers, you should also harden security. For a start, use distroless image to remove shell access.

I seldom own my books

#julyreply Michael Harley prefers to read books on an e-reader, and makes sure he truly owns them by stripping off the DRM if possible. » I own my books This is not a problem for me because I mostly borrow books from the library with an app called Libby. The library system w...

How the web got gunked

Posted on Twitter in the middle of last night, written on iPad. I use twitter these days because it’s where the people are. The distributed ideas, masto, threads, blue-sky, did not gain critical mass as far as I can see. Threads and blue-sky are not distributed. distributab...

rss chat is now simper to set up  so I gave it a wee go on local host. So far I’ve just run it from my downloads folder.  The instructions worked but I am a node-no-nothing so I tripped a couple of times.  First I didn’t npm install so nothing worked. I tried to set up SMTP […]

Elsewhere: "Threads and Bluesky are not distributed. Distributable is not the same as being distributed. It’s like saying the Mets were able to win the World Series in 1962. In some fashion perhaps in an alternate universe, in reality, not gonna happen."

It Was Always a Love Story, Actually

What could a prestige antihero legal drama and a shonen apocalypse epic have in common? As it turns out, love. An analysis and comparison of Attack on Titan and Better Call Saul. Beyond the violent carnage, there's a tender love and labour which these two impossibly different pieces of media share.

It's a lot simpler and faster to install new instance of rss.chat. You don't have to create and host your own database, that's now built into the server using SQLite. Full instructions on how to install. If you have questions or issues, we've started a thread on the repo. More about this to come.

The tool stack behind this blog

This one’s ai-slop, as advertised on the about page — I paired with Claude Code to build this site’s entire publishing pipeline, and it seemed only right to have it write up its own plumbing.

Here’s what’s actually running under the hood.

Hugo, with PaperMod

The site is a static Hugo build using the PaperMod theme, installed as a proper git submodule (not vendored — git submodule update --remote themes/PaperMod pulls upstream changes when I want them). Two sections get custom layouts instead of PaperMod’s defaults:
