Republicans Have a Thee Too Problem

The people that stuck by a guy who bragged about grabbing people by the pussy want to lecture others about their tolerance for misconduct.

The Neanderthal “love story” isn’t what the DNA actually shows

Claims that Neanderthal men "preferred" Homo sapiens women may make for catchy headlines, but the underlying research does not actually show prehistoric romance. The genetic evidence only points to an uneven pattern of DNA inheritance, which could have been shaped by biology, migration, or social organization. Archaeological evidence suggests Neanderthal groups may have followed traditions where women moved between communities, opening the door to far more complicated explanations than simple attraction.

AI just supercharged the race to find room temperature superconductors

Scientists have combined machine learning with quantum physics to discover two new superconductors and create a much faster way to search for many more. The technique could bring researchers significantly closer to the long-sought goal of a room-temperature superconductor.

Finished reading: Homebound by Portia Elan. Good concept, but the separate timelines didn’t really come together in a big way at the end as I was hoping. Still enjoyed it. 📚

Tesla in-cabin camera fails to prevent 60 mph naps as Wisk Aero faces lawsuit

On today’s surveillance-heavy episode of Quick Charge, it sure looks like Tesla’s in-cabin driver cam failed to stop one woman from falling asleep at the wheel, but safety and attention monitoring may not be the end game for that camera after all.

America Kept Inviting Me to Her Birthday Party, But I Just Wanted to Take Her to the Hospital So She Can Get the Help She Sorely Needs

America kept on trying to get me to go to her birthday party. She does this every year, but this time it got really weird. She sent reminder after reminder, over and over again, that it was going to be her birthday soon, like, months in advance. “I’ve actually been celebrati...

Monday's parting shots

A large limb broke off the American elm near the Tompkins Square Park entrance at Avenue B and Ninth Street today, temporarily closing one of the tennis-handball courts. Later in the day, EVG reader Heather Dubin reported that a Parks Forestry crew was removing the fallen limb and reopened the court.  This marks the second sizable branch to fall from the tree this year. Another came down during high winds in late May. Parks Forestry inspected the elm after that incident, per public records.

Saying Goodbye

On Friday afternoon, a longtime local friend of 25 years, Ron, told me that he would be ending his life on Sunday through "assisted suicide" (End of Life Option Act). I had known for months that this was his plan due to his terminal cancer, but we didn’t know when it would happen; it all depended on how quickly the disease progressed.

Last night, Ron’s widow told me that he passed away very peacefully yesterday morning. This is the first time that someone I've known personally has opted for assisted suicide.

RIP Ron.
