Was the Declaration of Independence Better Before the Edits? Not a great headline on this excellent article; it’s actually a history of the writing of the Declaration and subsequent generations' interpretation of the document, up to and including Abraham Lincoln (whom a college literature professor of mine said was the only American President who was also one of the greatest writers in the English language.)

By Jill Lepore, who is always worth reading and listening to on podcasts, on the New Yorker.

Getting Started with SimulIDE and Arduino

I was looking for an alternative to Tinkercad to simulate building, coding, and running Arduino projects. SimulIDE Circuit Simulator seemed like an ideal candidate. SimulIDE is a simple real time electronic circuit simulator, intended for hobbyist or students to learn and experiment with analog and digital electronic circuits and microcontrollers. It supports PIC,...

This spray-on powder can stop life-threatening bleeding in 1 second

A new spray-on powder developed by KAIST can stop life-threatening bleeding in about one second by instantly forming a strong gel over a wound. It works on deep and irregular injuries where conventional hemostatic products often struggle and remains effective even after years of storage in harsh conditions. Originally created for the battlefield, the technology could also transform emergency care in disasters, ambulances, and hospitals.

I recently rewatched “Animal House,” a movie I absolutely adore, and was talking to a friend about it and how The Young People don’t get that movie. “It’s stupid and offensive!” they say, and I respond, “Yes! And it was stupid and offensive then too! And it was great!”

My friend said, “Yes, back then we liked being offended.” And I said, “Yes! That’s exactly right!”

I never really thought of it that way before. Being offended can be hilarious, if you’re of the right mindset. Many of us love offensive comedy the way many love horror movies — nobody actually loves being chased around by a guy in a leather mask in a chainsaw but make a movie out of that and it becomes a cult classic.

And speaking of offensive: I rewatched “Animal House” in 5- and 10-minute bursts on my iPhone over the course of a week or two, which will be highly offensive to cinephiles.

More reporting today from the Financial Times that OpenAI suggested a 5% stake for the government:

Sam Altman, chief executive of the ChatGPT maker, has argued that giving the public a financial stake in the company is the best way to share the upside of AI and has suggested a stake of this size in early conversations with the administration, according to two people familiar with the talks.

It’s a good idea, but Trump is so transactional that I don’t trust his administration to manage this. Congress should pass an actual law that sets up the fund.

From the FAQ for the laundry-folding robot, Isaac 1:

Isaac 1 is autonomous for Laundry Flow and Daily Reset by default, with teleoperation assistance when needed to guarantee we complete tasks.

I get that companies want to ship something, but this isn’t like software that can be iterated on later. If it can’t work fully autonomously, private to the home, I don’t think it’s ready.

Tesla launches Model Y L in US — 6 seats, 325 miles, $61,990

Tesla has launched the Model Y L, its stretched, three-row, six-seat SUV, in the US and Puerto Rico. The automaker confirmed the launch on Thursday, with the vehicle now configurable online.

The Model Y L arrives first as a “Launch Series” priced at $61,990 — more than Tesla’s own Model Y Performance and both of its main three-row EV rivals.
